Summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering the most technically complex programmes in Defence. We employ over 1500 people and have an annual spend of c. £3.5 billion.

Job description

Do you want to be part of a diverse multi-disciplined team and play a key role in supporting the security of the UK? If you have the pride, passion and commitment to be part of an exciting organisation at the forefront of supporting our national security, now and into the future, then we want to hear from you.

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) requires a Chief Engineer to join their improvement focussed, cross-functional team. The SDA is responsible for the United Kingdom’s submarine maintenance and build programme, a top priority of our defence, focussed on the effective and efficient procurement and support of some of the most complex equipment in the world. This new role is critical to our ‘category management guiding hand’ team, which works with SDA delivery programmes, as well as prime and sub-tier suppliers, in the intelligent application of category management tailored to the submarine enterprise.

If you are a self-driven engineer, looking to use your stakeholder management and communication skills in the highest-profile projects, affecting improvement inside the MOD and our submarine supply chain, then we invite you to apply for this opportunity.

Please note that, due to security requirements, this post is open to sole UK nationals only.

Responsibilities

As an open-minded ‘systems thinker’, you will see issues from multiple stakeholder perspectives, diving into detail and offering recommendations on shaping category strategies, from an engineering perspective. You will help us take more consideration of potential engineering improvements and build on the more traditional cost perspective of category management.

You will scope required engineering input to categories, and facilitate and manage engineers from across the team, coordinating and coaching them through the specifics of the work involved, whilst promoting synergy between categories.

Within the team, we have mechanical, electronic and systems engineers, who you will call on for support in the delivery of your responsibilities. You will work alongside our category management Programme Manager and our team of category managers, to initiate, establish and support categories across the submarine portfolio. You will also work closely with our main suppliers, to ensure the maintenance of good relationships and a coherence of approach.

As a team, we sit in the Commercial Directorate and, collectively, have a diverse set of skills, knowledge and experience. The subject matter of the team is broad, so your skills and knowledge should allow confident involvement across the category portfolio; on this basis, we are open to you coming from almost any engineering discipline.

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following
