Full-Time Welder

Job Description

This is skilled level work involving the maintenance, repair and fabrication of vehicles and equipment using oxygen/acetylene, electric arc and wire feed welding equipment.

Work involves performing skilled level welding tasks and applying knowledge of brazing, blacksmithing and metal fabrication in the truck and machinery field. Work is done under general supervision and is reviewed upon completion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Perform Welding Tasks (30%): Perform cutting and welding operations on vehicles and equipment.
• Perform Fabrication Tasks 30%: Modify and fabricate metal articles such as plow couplers, hoist frames, leaf boxes and trailer hitches
• Perform Equipment Repairs 30%: Repair body panels, dump boxes, loader buckets, refuse bodies, and snow plows.
• Perform Other Repairs 10%: Assist mechanics in repair tasks such as spring replacement, hydraulic cylinder overhauls, and engine/transmission replacement.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• A minimum of two years of maintenance welding experience in the truck and machinery field.
• State of Wisconsin and/or AWS welding qualification/certification: minimum 1G required with 3G preferred.
• High school diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in welding or equivalent preferred.
• Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of the practices, materials and tools of the welding trade.
• Knowledge of the properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals.
• Knowledge of truck and machinery maintenance and repair methods.
• Ability to read blueprints and drawings and to take accurate measurements to plan specifications.
• Ability to provide wrenches and other hand tools necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
• Possess basic computer and clerical skills, including the ability to complete all paper work and records in an accurate and timely manner.
• Knowledge, understanding and application of safety practices related to job functions, including the proper handling of hazardous materials.
• Possess good communication skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work in a team environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use their hands to handle, feel or operate tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee is frequently required to lift and move 25 pounds and to occasionally lift and move weights up to or over 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in adverse weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment and parts and is frequently exposed to wet, cold, hot and humid conditions and to vibration. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work area is moderately loud.
