Full-Time Site Reliability Engineer

Job Description

As a Site Reliability Engineer at Pear Deck, you will be working to ensure and improve the reliability of the software services we provide to students and teachers. With your passion to constantly improve and ability to calmly focus on critical and time sensitive issues all while strategically planning for the future, you will be making our teachers’ lives easier while helping them engage every student every day.

Things you may do on a given day:

  • Check-in on the current project and agree to top priorities for the day
  • Monitor health of production infrastructure and investigate/analyze any issues and abnormalities to identify problems or bottlenecks
  • Develop plans and implement changes that provide continued and/or improved site reliability
  • Be on “pager duty” in order to deploy builds, hotfixes, and resolutions to emergencies on off hours
  • Review all logs and other system notification to ensure jobs are completed and escalate issues as required
  • Communicate uptime and quality of service issues effectively
  • Work with the team to schedule hardware and software maintenance to avoid downtime and maintain service levels
  • Assess new technologies and libraries 
  • Develop and maintain documentation for reliability and maintenance procedures
  • Drop everything and help troubleshoot an issue affecting teachers and students in class

Prior to this, it is likely you:

  • Have had significant experience with the following or related technologies:
    • GCP
    • AWS
    • Kubernetes
    • NodeJS
    • Prometheus
    • Firebase Realtime Database
    • Docker
    • MongoDB
    • Redis
    • BigQuery
  • Have worked well with non-technical company leaders
  • Have the willingness and ability to admit mistakes and communicate them promptly
  • Have the ability to remain calm and collected under pressure
  • Have demonstrated honesty, determination, brilliance, and humility


  • Experience proven through
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
    • and/or 3-5+ years experience as a site reliability engineer of SaaS applications
  • Excellent analytical/debugging skills and experience in handling production outages and root cause analysis
  • Experience with diagnosing and modifying code and configurations to improve availability, latency, and performance
  • Availability during our typical working hours of 9am – 5pm EST
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes days, nights, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Have experience with SaaS production environments with significant year over year growth
  • Up-to-date knowledge of web development languages, libraries, and technology
