Full-Time Parks Maintenance Worker

Job Description

This is a semi-skilled position performing a variety of manual labor tasks in maintenance and construction within parks, zoo and related facilities. Work includes responsibility for the efficient completion of work assigned. Work schedule may vary due to operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Perform general and preventative maintenance work on park and zoo buildings, grounds, facilities and amenities. (25%)
• Operate equipment to perform maintenance and construction related tasks in park and zoo facilities. Tasks include, but are not limited to landscaping, mowing, trimming, snow removal, herbicide applications, and athletic field maintenance and zoo operations. (25%)
• Assist with routine husbandry of captive wild and domesticated animals, including but not limited to animal care (diet prep, feeding, cleaning, grooming); exhibit inspection, maintenance and development. (25%)
• Monitors seasonal and part-time workers assigned to park and zoo facilities. (10%)
• Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to small engines including greasing, cleaning, and sharpening blades. (5%)
• Assists the Parks Trades Technicians in various park construction and maintenance projects. (5%)
• Performs other duties as assigned. (5%)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent. Grounds maintenance technical training is desired.
• Two years of experience in grounds and facility maintenance work and/or demonstrated experience with animal care.
• Possess and maintain a WI Class A CDL with no air brake restriction, or have the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Wisconsin pesticide and ornamental license desired.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of routine building and grounds cleaning and maintenance methods as they relate to the maintenance and care of park and zoo facilities.
• Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, practices, and materials used in landscaping, animal care, turf management, and grounds maintenance.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
• Ability to guide the work of seasonal helpers, interns, and contractual employees.
• Ability to effectively operate construction, landscape, and maintenance equipment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USE

All power and hand tools associated with grounds maintenance, equipment maintenance, and lawn care; equipment such as tandem dump truck, 2 ½ ton dump truck, one ton dump truck, backhoe, front end loader tractor, skid loader, pickup truck with plow, leaf pickers, snow blower, tiller, chain saw, and riding lawn mowers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, bend, lift, reach, push, pull, squat, and kneel; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, talk, or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee frequently works around dangerous animals, moving mechanical parts, fumes, and in outside exposure to wet, cold, hot and humid conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
