Full-Time Infrastructure Engineer

Janet.bourland.ctr@tri.global – Posted by Janet.bourland.ctr@tri.global Los Altos, California, United States

Job Description

At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re working to build a future where everyone has the freedom to move, engage, and explore with a focus on reducing vehicle collisions, injuries, and fatalities. Join us in our mission to improve the quality of human life through advances in artificial intelligence, automated driving, robotics, and materials science. We’re dedicated to building a world of “mobility for all” where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can live in harmony with technology to enjoy a better life. Through innovations in AI, we’ll help…
– Develop vehicles incapable of causing a crash, regardless of the actions of the driver.
– Develop technology for vehicles and robots to help people enjoy new levels of independence, access, and mobility.
– Bring advanced mobility technology to market faster.
– Discover new materials that will make batteries and hydrogen fuel cells smaller, lighter, less expensive and more powerful.
– Develop human-centered AI systems to augment (not replace) human decision making to increase the quality of decisions (e.g. mitigate cognitive biases) and/or to facilitate faster innovation cycles.
Our work is guided by a dedication to safety – in both what we research and how we perform our research our goal is to benefit society. As a subsidiary of Toyota, TRI is fueled by a diverse and inclusive community of people who carry invaluable leadership, experience, and ideas from industry-leading companies. Over half of our technical team carries PhD degrees. We’re continually searching for the world’s best talent ‒ people who are ready to define the new world of mobility with us!
We strive to build a company that helps our people thrive, achieve work-life balance, and bring their best selves to work. At TRI, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds ‒ a fun environment with forward-thinking people who enjoy solving tough problems and the financial backing to successfully achieve our goals. Come work with TRI if you’re interested in transforming mobility through designing technology for safer cars, enabling the elderly to age in place, or designing alternative fuel sources. Start your impossible with us.
About The Infrastructure Engineering Team:
As much code runs inside an autonomous car or robot, more code runs in the cloud. Services and pipelines that process data is what our machine learning, mapping, robotics, and simulation teams build to implement their own initiatives.
The Infrastructure Engineering team is responsible for designing, deploying and maintaining the infrastructure that makes this possible. But developer productivity is not our only goal. We believe in scale (“consume petabytes of driving data”), governance (“explain through data that our car did the right thing”), and cross-platform execution (“deploy an image-processing service in AWS or inside a robot”). We are looking for engineers that can make this possible.
If you are an engineer that wants to work collaboratively with a team on a well-defined set of objectives come talk to us about your next career move.

Responsibilities:

    • Identify and/or develop necessary tools and processes and integrate with cloud services or third-party tools to make infrastructure management a non-issue, especially clusters, job scheduling and storage systems.
    • Deploy and monitor cloud services to meet and exceed service-level agreements with partners.
    • Collaboratively design solutions that follow fault-tolerance and security standard methodologies.
    • Work closely/embed as a multi-functional team member, helping to support research and engineering teams across problem domains. In addition to hands-on infrastructure deployments, provide general guidance and standard methodologies.
    • Collaborate with IT team on delivery of comprehensive infrastructure solutions.
    • Draw upon all previous knowledge and experience to develop relationships and cultivate trust and confidence across TRI.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Strong communication skills. Great Teammate. Good Listener.
    • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and direction in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment; tolerance for ambiguity with an ability to synthesize many inputs and move an initiative forward
    • General software development experience; strong Python and Bash scripting skills
    • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems.
    • Experience working with cloud infrastructure/deployments across a range of solution types: CI/CD (Jenkins), data processing pipelines/DAGs, web applications, machine learning infrastructure, packaged software deployments
    • Experience maintaining systems in AWS (experience with other clouds is a plus). Understand and follow the Well-Architected Framework.
    • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform and CloudFormation) deployment and maintenance.
    • Experience with cloud operations tooling (Ansible, Chef, etc) and custom orchestration.
    • Experience with Docker and container management systems like Kubernetes/EKS/ECS in production.
    • Experience with log aggregation and monitoring for large cloud systems.(ElasticSearch, Graylog a plus)
    • Experience securing infrastructure using AWS native tools such as IAM, S3 permissions management, etc., alongside general defense-in-depth principles and methods.
    • Experience with large scale storage systems (cloud and on-prem, NAS).
    • Experience deploying applications to heterogeneous environments: cloud, on-prem (private cloud), and end-user (developer, robot).
    • Experience with Git, Continuous Integration (Jenkins), Code Reviews.
