Job description

For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail across our military history including both World Wars. The British Forces Post Office is dedicated to providing postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renowned brand across Defence. Our 250 dedicated, hard-working civilian and military staff work collaboratively to deliver both personal and official mail to over 650 locations across the globe; keeping our armed forces connected through free letter and parcel services that play a vital role in sustaining the morale of our Armed Forces.

Responsibilities

Our Mail Operators ensure that the armed forces mail is handled in a secure, safe and timely fashion. You will be responsible for ensuring the correct receipt, sorting and dispatch of all types of mail in a secure, logical and methodical manner. Part of your role will be to follow standard BFPO mail handling procedures, including managing irregularities such as damaged, broken, loose or otherwise different items; including prohibited and restricted mail items.

As a Mail Operator, you will work a standard week of 07:30 – 16:00hrs (Monday – Friday)

Key responsibilities associated with these demands are:

• To maintain the flow of mail (postal and courier items) to support the needs of the customer with relevant British Forces Post Office (BFPO) key targets, in accordance with all relevant Service Level Agreements (SLAs), as well as security instructions relating to handling of Protectively Marked Material (PMM) and Health and Safety legislation.

To be successful in the role, it is likely you will have:

• 5 GCSEs /or equivalent qualifications or equivalent relevant experience.
• Previous experience of working in a team
• General knowledge of IT Systems and Microsoft Office applications where applicable as well as the ability to train and become compliant on other various IT systems.

Additionally, your application would benefit from:

• Previous experience of working in a mail processing organisation.

It is essential that applicants have and maintain a full UK driving license, with a maximum of 6 penalty points (endorsements).

Restaurant and gym facilities (at Parsons Barracks) within 5 minutes’ drive from the DMC can be used by DMC staff. Additionally, free car parking is available on site for all employees.
