Job description
Air Platform or System Safety Manager is usually a Safety Responsible or Safety Delegated assignment (in accordance with the taxonomy in DE&S Acquisition Safety Programme). Typically they are responsible to the Safety and Compliance Lead and Chief Engineer (Platform Type Airworthiness Authority, TAA) for among other things:
• Developing, managing, and maintaining an effective Safety Management System. Ensuring the Safety Management Plan complies with Military Aviation Authority (MAA) regulation and DE&S policy and follows recognised best practice;
• Reviewing safety artefacts from the platform Design Organisation and DE&S Commodity Delivery Team’s and making safety recommendations to the TAA to support Release to Service Recommendations;
• Managing the safety interface with the platform Design Organisation to ensure that the safety requirements detailed in the Statement of Requirement for the In-Service Support Contract are delivered to an appropriate standard to support the Type Airworthiness Safety Assessment;
• Maintaining the Type Airworthiness Safety Assessments and managing safety governance processes and meetings (eg: Air Equipment Safety reviews and the Project Safety & Environmental Panel)
• Leading Safety activity associated with Capability projects being integrated onto the platform;
• Leading the Safety Engineering team; building and maintaining good working relationships with safety stakeholders, platform operators and our industry partners;
• Provide safety SME advice to key internal safety and environmental meetings e.g. Integrity Working Groups, Local Technical Committee, Configuration Control Board, Hazard Working Group, Hazard Review Meeting etc
You may be required to:
• Oversee, direct and review the activities of an Independent Safety Auditor or provide tasking to and liaise with the Independent Technical Evaluator
• Lead UK Safety discussions with Partner Nations.

These roles will be reporting into Management based at AbbeyWood. Our teams are currently working predominantly from home due to COVID-19 restrictions. Under our general conditions we offer flexible working arrangements and we would be happy to discuss these with successful candidates.
Responsibilities
These roles are challenging and present great development opportunity due to the diversity of complex projects within the Domain. Safety is central to our culture. As such the Safety Manager is a key influencer for the Chief Engineer, Delivery Team Leader, OC Director and Air Systems Duty Holders.
One position will be only open to Sole UK nationals only due to security requirements.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Experience working as a leader in an engineering safety role within the aviation sector
• Professional Registration with a recognised Engineering Institute, or the equivalent working experience
• Completion of a level 5 (or higher) in a relevant engineering qualification, or the equivalent working experience
• Demonstrable experience facilitating hazard assessments
• Demonstrable experience of producing safety assessments for complex aero systems
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Demonstration of meeting System Safety Competences (SYSSAF) 1 to 5
• Use of eCassandra
• Use of the Adelard Air Systems Safety Case Environment tool
• Completion of System Safety training including Practitioner Examination
