Job description
Are you interested in working at the cutting-edge of technology, working towards making our waters safer?
The Mine Hunting Capability programme exists to replace the Royal Navy’s existing mine hunters with a range of new, autonomous mine hunting and mine sweeping systems to safely clear sea lanes of mines.
The systems’ innovative and modernised technology has the ability to locate and defeat modern sea mines, which can detect and target military ships passing overhead. The new remotely operated and autonomous mine countermeasures systems feature a wide range of advanced technology, enabling the systems to work together with the common goal of making the seas safer.
We have a high profile role for the Mine Hunting Capability project Chief Engineer, who will be the lead for all engineering, safety and environmental outputs for the various systems and capabilities being developed by the Mine Hunting Capability project, including: the Anglo-French Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) programme; mine sweeping capability; route survey capability; autonomous systems trials programme.
This is a defining role, offering the chance to work with and develop new technology, and the opportunity to influence the way that the Royal Navy carries out mine countermeasures and providing a step-change in the Royal Navy’s capability.
Responsibilities
• You will be accountable for defining and delivering the Mine Hunting Capability engineering approach, including setting the strategic direction and the engineering decisions made in the development of the capability and transition to service
• Provide an independent perspective on innovation and technology risk in the delivery of the capability. Use appropriate engineering tools and assurance activities, and define and deliver the Mine Hunting Capability engineering management plan. Ensure that all legal and regulatory requirements are met, including Naval Authority requirements. Ensure that all engineering risks are managed and ensure sound engineering decision making
• Lead, manage and integrate multi-disciplined engineering and science teams; direct engineering resources to deliver outputs including new products and complex upgrades, utilising new and existing technologies, requiring multiple interfaces with customers and suppliers.
• Be responsible for testing and trials activity and planning of all systems engineering
• Be responsible for personnel development and maintenance of engineering standards within MHC
This is a Senior Safety Responsible post, and so you will be accountable for ensuring that Mine Hunting Capability systems and equipment is ‘safe to operate’ and environmentally sound. You will be the final signatory on all MHC Safety and Environmental Cases. This will include ensuring that Mine Hunting Capability systems are compliant with relevant legislation and MOD and DE&S safety and environmental policy.
