By joining the Engineering function you will be joining one of the biggest functions within DE&S.

The Engineering functions primary objective is to focus on the delivery of our equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines such as: mechanical, electrical & power distribution; software, sensors & electronic systems; acquisition safety & environmental protection; quality assurance; ordnance munitions & explosives, as well as systems engineering & integration.

The Internal Technical Support (ITS) team is Defence Equipment & Supports in-house technical consultancy team established to reduce our reliance on Private Sector Support (PSS) expenditure across the whole of DE&S. The ITS-ISA team is a significant and growing area of consultancy and provides the business with an Independent Safety and/or Environmental Audit or Advice service. The team aims to competitively reduce PSS costs, improve contract/delivery times and increase consistency by identifying and spreading Safety and Environmental best practice across DE&S. In addition the team promotes skills development, standardises approaches and increases knowledge transfer across DE&S.

Responsibilities

In your team you will provide expert independent safety and/or environmental advice and audit in support of project and programme activities across all areas of the organisation. As an Independent Safety and/or Environmental Auditor or Advisor you will provide consultancy audit or advice services to DE&S Delivery Teams to assure the delivery of safe and suitable equipment to the Front Line Commands. To carry out these audit and advice services it is required that you have consultancy experience in a relevant engineering and safety/ environmental discipline and in at least one of the equipment domains for which DE&S operates. You will have involvement in contracting for and delivering against all aspects of System Safety and/ or System Environmental Management including, but not restricted to: hazard analysis; risk assessment; assessing the safety and environmental implications of design changes; and producing or assessing key project safety and environmental documentation. These activities will be performed in the context of UK, MOD, and DE&S policy and guidance.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
• Scoping fixed price technical consultancy tasks to meet customers’ needs and be deliverable to cost, time and quality.
• Managing the delivery of fixed price technical consultancy tasks to customer satisfaction, cost and quality.
• Working on complex products, systems and services for example in defence, aerospace, maritime, weapons, automotive, rail or another high technology sectors.
• Helping clients solve complex safety and environmental challenges and problems.
• Provide an independent audit capability against a catalogue of services to provide best practice and best value to the customer.

Key to your success will be your ability to demonstrate:
• A comprehensive knowledge, understanding and experience of using a range of safety and/or environmental tools and techniques allowing you to demonstrate a proven track record, using specific examples, of high hazard, high consequence and complex systems projects that you have been employed on and/or audited against.
• Relevant and current consultancy experience.
• Practical experience of implementing safety and/or environmental management systems for products, services or systems, either as part of design or in-service support
• Knowledge and experience of developing clear, logical and convincing safety arguments in support of safety assessments or safety cases.
• Knowledge and experience of developing environmental bodies of evidence in support of cogent environmental arguments and environmental cases.
• An engineering background supported with either suitable qualifications or professional memberships and the ability to demonstrate you have developed to an expert/ practitioner level within one of the specific areas DE&S covers, and ideally multiple areas. (I.e. Maritime, Weapons, Air, Nuclear and Land).
• An excellent level of stakeholder management and communication skills at a senior level – able to act as the independent subject matter expert/ practitioner to challenge/ support delivery teams and industry partners

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Engineering experience from within regulated industry (e.g. defence, aerospace, nuclear), ideally supported with relevant qualifications and demonstrable experience of having lead a team to produce successful engineering outcomes
• Demonstrable and relevant consultancy experience, with the ability to scope and deliver high quality outputs to time and cost against developed programmes of work
• Knowledge, understanding and experience using a range of environmental/safety tools and techniques, with demonstrable track record of employment on/auditing against complex projects
• Practical experience of implementing environmental/safety management systems for products, services or systems, either as part of design or in-service support
• Knowledge and experience of developing environmental/safety bodies of evidence, in support of compelling environmental arguments and environmental cases.

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• An Engineering Qualification with a further Bachelors/ Post Graduate or relevant qualification in Systems Safety, Systems Environment or other safety or environmental discipline
• A lead auditors qualification
• Professional registration with a relevant institution.
• Further knowledge and experience of complex projects with significant software or complex hardware components is also desirable
• Knowledge and experience of developing environmental/safety bodies of evidence, in support of compelling environmental arguments and environmental cases.
