SDA Offices, BAES Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, LA14 1AF/ MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol, BS34 8JH/ HMNB Clyde, HM Naval Base, Faslane, Helensburgh, Scotland, G84 0EH.

Salary

£46,750 – £55,000

Job description

As a standalone entity within the MOD, the SDA has been created as a high-performing organisation, bringing together existing expertise with heightened managerial, commercial and procurement capability to ensure the excellence and cost-efficient delivery of the UK’s nuclear submarine assets for decades to come. In addition to procuring the replacement of the current Vanguard class with its successor, Dreadnought, the organisation also manages the in-service aspects of the Astute class submarines and its follow-on vessel. The SDA is also responsible for the decommissioning and disposal of the Trafalgar class submarines and, in the longer term, other submarines taken out of service.

Within the SDA, the aim of the Dreadnought Supply and Support Team (DSST) is to deliver key elements of equipment into the Dreadnought SSBN programme and ensure that these submarines are ready to enter service once constructed to maintain continuous at sea deterrence (CASD).

Our Project Management function is tasked with the delivery of equipment and support in order to meet our agreed outputs. The expertise within Project Management includes: project, programme & portfolio management (P3M) across the acquisition lifecycle including business case, contract and performance management.

Responsibilities

The role as Dreadnought Sea Trials Project Manager is responsible for the management of key sea trials activities from the build programme to ensuring a smooth transition into service.

– Coordinate and develop the post-Barrow sea trials schedule.
– Develop effective and deliverable mitigations to reduce the sea trials period and thereby facilitate the delivery of a safe and sufficiently capable submarine on patrol.
– Develop a method to trial and demonstrate an effective Maintenance Upkeep and Operating Cycle for Dreadnought prior to proceeding on patrol.
– Review the principal lessons identified from ASTUTE Route to Operations and identify mitigations for Dreadnought and the class.
– Mature the sea trials strategy for a successful period from exit Barrow to On Patrol to inform the Delivery Phase 3 contract negotiations.
– Identify support priorities to deliver ongoing efficient support based at the Clyde that will sustain CASD.
– Develop cost model for sea trials activity.
– Effectivly Manage and maintain strong internal and external Stakeholder relationships
– Accountable for establishing, leading and managing high performing multi-disciplinary teams and setting project, change programme, or OBI direction across all Functions to deliver agreed outcomes.
– Accountable for the delivery of their projects and supporting project documentation and requirements within the performance/cost/time envelope for a sub-portfolio or complex project. This includes ensuring the most cost-effective means of delivery whilst mitigating risk.

Due to the nature of the role, travel will be required to be undertaken between any of the 3 sites (Abbeywood/Clyde/Barrow in Furness)

This role, if based at Barrow offers successful applicants the following:
– External Applicants: First Appointment Expenses up to a limit of £8,000
– Internal Applicants: Internal candidates will be eligible for full relocation expenses.

If based at Bristol or Clyde – this role will require regular travel to the SDA site in Barrow-in-Furness.

Please note that due to the nature of the projects involved, this role will be open to Sole UK nationals only.

What you will be assessed against
To be successful a candidate needs to demonstrate a cross-section of the following vital experience essential criteria:
• Sea trials programme experience
• Experience of leading and managing a project management team delivering complex portfolio projects across the full project lifecycle
• “In service” support experience
• Understanding of submarine maintence and operating cycle

It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience of US sea trials programmes
• Certified within any of the following, to Practitioner Level or equivalent: APM PMQ, PLP, MSP, PRINCE2, MAPM ChPP or RPP or relevant Post-Graduate qualification i.e. MSc Project Management
