Job Description

Head of Electrics 

The Head of Electrics will lead on all aspects of electrical, audio-visual and associated control systems within the theatre relating to both the production and the building. Working closely with the Technical & Buildings Manager, you will ensure there is an efficient, cost effective and robust maintenance plan in place and delivered, meeting operational and compliance needs. You will lead on the production electrical and audio-visual requirements, working closely with Technical and Buildings Manager and visiting production & show management to ensure a smooth and safe get in, fit up and get out. This role will involves regular evening and weekend work. 

Key responsibilities

Technical   

  • Supporting the Technical & Buildings Manager, you will lead on all electrical, lighting and audio-visual matters and systems relating to visiting productions. Hires or events, and creative learning activities ensuring a robust, cost-effective plan is in place.    
  • Implement venue, company and wider industry policies, guidance and best practice ensuring that the production is delivered safely.    
  • In-line with the Technical and Buildings Manager liaise with visiting production managers ahead of arrival at the theatre to ensure all electrical and audio-visual needs have been considered and agreed prior to the get in commencing.    
  • Working with the General Manager, Technical and Buildings Manager and London Programmer, ensure the stage is well equipped for one off hires and events, liaising with the promoter / hirer and the resident production to maintain effective communication.   

 

Compliance & Facilities Management   

  • With the Technical and Buildings Manger implement a plan to maintain and test all electrical and technical ensuring that all systems and equipment meet legislative and compliance-based regulations   
  • Report system and equipment failures and maintenance issues to the Technical & Buildings Manager / General Manager / Central Operations Team in a timely manner    
  • Assist the Technical & Buildings Manager / General Manager with reviewing and updating the 5-year building maintenance and investment plan    
  • Align with the Central Operations Team / theatre team, leading on all electrical improvement works within the theatre    
  • Using the Meridian building compliance software, ensure accurate record keeping and completing all associated remedial actions in a timely manner.    
  • Supporting the Technical & Buildings Manager with the necessary weekly / monthly / annual testing of equipment, highlighting issues as and when they arise   

 

Staff Development, Training & Relationships    

  • Recruit, train and appraise the Senior Technicians supporting both the Head of Electrics and Head of Stage    
  • Utilising the Learning Management software, ensure training is kept up to date for direct reports and keep up to date with relevant industry training, highlighting new opportunities as and when they arise    
  • In conjunction with the Technical & Buildings Manager, lead on all performance management issues for the Senior Technicians, liaising with HR and theatre management as necessary    
  • Attend all necessary compliance and safety training relating to your role as well as all relevant personnel training relating to performance management / development   
  • Actively lead on your own personal development, seeking out opportunities both internally and externally to ensure you remain abreast of industry developments    
  • Working with the Theatre Administrator, ensure accurate input to the Time and Attendance system for your direct reports, and complete accurate timesheets on a weekly basis    
  • In conjunction with the Theatre Administrator, ensure accurate training records are kept for all direct reports   
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with various stakeholders across the Company, including other HODs within the theatre and the Central Operations Team.    

 

Health & Safety    

  • Working with the Technical & Buildings Manager / Theatre Management team, ensure all operations relating to the electrical and audio-visual infrastructure of the building meet with current legislation, industry best practice and ATG Entertainment policies and procedures.    
  • Ensure that all relevant company risk management processes are met and documented    
  • Generate and review risk assessments relating to all electrical and audio-visual infrastructure and operations within the building, liaising with the Central Operations Team where appropriate support is required    
  • Ensure the Contractor Management Policy is followed by all third-party visitors    
  • Contribute to the annual health and safety audit and fire risk assessment    
  • Attend health & safety meetings and actively contribute to a culture that is safety first, lowering the risk associated with the theatre and all associated works.    

 

Other Duties    

  • As and when the business requires, support other ATG Entertainment theatres across the West End estate   
  • Support the theatres Corporate Social Responsibility policy, actively participating in community-based initiatives and Creative Learning & Community Partnership agenda     
  • Undertake any such duties as required by the theatre management team    
  • Act as the duty technician or duty fire officer for no fewer than three performances a week  

Your skills, qualities, and experience.

We welcome transferable skills from other industries. If you can demonstrate many of the essential skills, qualities and experience we encourage you to apply. We are able to provide training where necessary.

Essential   

  • Significant prior experience in a technical theatre setting with a focus on electrics and AV   
  • Experience managing and leading a team of people, with demonstrable people management skills    
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including experience of LOLER & Working at Height    

Desirable   

  • IOSH / NEBOSH certificate   
  • Experience in leading on get ins, fit ups and get outs    
  • Relevant electrical installation qualification (18th edition) or equivalent experience 
  •  First Aid at Work / AED training
