Full-Time IL Agroforestry Educator
Job Description
The Illinois-based Agroforestry Educator will work with diverse communities to make agroforestry possible in Illinois by building and providing educational and technical resources to farmers and landholders. The Agroforestry Educator also builds educational programming and conducts outreach for the Illinois Demonstration Farms for diverse audiences including farmers, landholders, organizational and agency partners, and the general public. This position is designed to be dynamic, adaptable, and community-informed.
The Illinois Agroforestry Educator is a vital and valued member of the Demonstration and Education Teams, which are focused on accessible agroforestry education, training, and land access. This position also works closely with the Agroforestry Adoption Team, composed of staff members who support the Technical Service Provider Program, which provides one-on-one support to farmers and landholders seeking to plan, design, and establish agroforestry on their farmlands.

Start Date: May 15, 2023
Salary: $53,000 to $55,000
– This position is mostly virtual, with most work focused within 1 hr of Champaign-Urbana. Occasional, reimbursed travel required to destinations in Illinois and Wisconsin.
– This position is eligible for the Institute’s benefits package. Benefits for full-time employees include 30 days paid time off per year, a Health Reimbursement arrangement that can be applied to insurance premiums and approved healthcare costs, and a monthly home office stipend.
– This position reports to the Director of Demonstration Farms. Supervisor references are available upon request.

Duties/Responsibilities
– Serve as a subject matter expert and “cultural translator”, helping farmers, landholders, and the public understand the role agroforestry can play to strengthen their landscapes, economies, and communities
– Lead engaging and fun on-farm and off-farm educational events through the Demo Farm Network and other Savanna Institute programs
– Develop agroforestry-focused educational and technical outreach materials and resources for a diverse set of needs and audiences
Additional duties include:
– Support collaborative work within the Demonstration and Education Teams, including but not limited to: SI’s Agroforestry Apprenticeship Program, online education, train-the-trainer materials, land access, and SI’s Partner Farm Network
– Assist with grant writing and other fund development to support the work of the Agroforestry Adoption Team. Work in coordination with other staff on developing charitable-, sponsor-, and revenue-based financial support for these programs.
Required Qualifications
● Public speaking experience
● Strong interpersonal and writing skills

● Background in agriculture (varied experience welcomed: academic, fieldwork, programmatic, educational, etc.)
● Familiarity with Google Suite applications
● Access to personal phone/computer
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience with perennial cropping systems, forestry, and/or agroforestry
● Experience leading educational events
● JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, & inclusivity) training and experience
Physical Requirements
Ability to
○ walk on uneven ground at least one mile
○ stand for 2-4 hours at a time
○ lift 25 lbs
○ speak loudly and clearly in outdoor settings
