Community Engagement Manager

Boston, MA | Full-Time Exempt

Founded in 1980, the Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth (BAGLY) is an organization led by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet the core physical, social, and developmental needs of Greater Boston’s LGBTQ+ youth community. Today, BAGLY provides community-based leadership development, health promotion, and social support programs for Massachusetts’ LGBTQ+ youth communities, and is a leader in local and national LGBTQ+ youth advocacy.

As the Community Engagement Manager, reporting to the Director of Development & Marketing with the Development & Marketing team at BAGLY, you will help develop, implement, and measure BAGLY’s annual marketing, communications, and outreach plan(s).  You will largely own BAGLY’s outward-facing communications strategies, including the organization’s social media presence, website, branded merchandise, and the marketing of its programs and services.  Additionally, you will support the organization’s engagement/outreach efforts with other non-profit organizations and MA-based schools. You will also work closely with your peers and colleagues to raise BAGLY’s profile, articulate BAGLY’s mission and impact, and craft strong written and presentation materials.

The current expectation is that this position will be hybrid at the BAGLY offices in downtown Boston, MA. Work-from-home and remote office accommodations will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Successful applicants will live within reasonable commuting distance from BAGLY’s Community Center, or be willing to relocate.  Occasional travel will be required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Managing community engagement opportunities, including:
    • Consistently auditing, updating, and improving BAGLY’s website and SEO strategy  in order to increase program participation and donor engagement;
    • Increasing supporter engagement with BAGLY’s social media presence across 4 primary platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok;
    • Planning and implementing email campaigns that identify BAGLY as a thought-leader and positively impacts program, event, and fundraising outcomes;
    • Working to identify and solicit all types of new partnerships with an emphasis on working closely with school districts, community partners, and corporate partners.
  • Managing BAGLY’s branding strategy, including:
    • Assisting in the design and creation of striking marketing collateral ranging from direct mail to annual reports and branded merchandise;
    • Collaborating on updates to BAGLY’s style guide.
  • Attending community and partner events throughout Massachusetts.
  • Ensuring consistent supervision to direct reports, youth peer leaders, interns, and adult volunteers to implement community engagement priorities.
  • Communicating and anticipating problems and risks in support of the continuous quality improvement of all community engagement activities.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Ideal candidates will demonstrate capabilities that meet the basic qualifications. Advanced qualifications are a plus, but not required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A degree with an emphasis on communications, marketing, and branding is preferred, but different combinations of work experience and education will be strongly considered
  • Demonstrably strong and persuasive writing ability
  • Enjoys public speaking opportunities
  • Professional experience managing social media platforms and websites
  • Project management experience in a team setting
  • Experience working in advocacy, nonprofit organizations, leading employee resource groups, and/or public or funding institutions
  • Experience working with CRMs and online marketing tools
  • Experience working with young people or other marginalized communities
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, and a demonstrated ability to anticipate and proactively address challenges
  • Professional maturity, flexibility, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement

Advanced Qualifications:

  • Multilingual candidates are a plus 
  • Demonstrated success increasing community engagement, including participation in programs, donor engagement, and other forms of support
  • Supervisory experience including a mix of full time staff, part time staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Robust portfolio that demonstrates strong graphic design skills 
  • Successful history of designing and implementing a successful SEO strategy 
  • Advanced experience with website design and utility 
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with fundraising and development campaigns 
  • Demonstrated understanding of how to market programs and services to stakeholders that have been made vulnerable by structural oppression

Anticipated Salary Range: $55,000 – $60,000

The starting salary will be determined based on how many basic and advanced qualifications are demonstrated.
