£47,600 – £56,000 per annum (plus benefits).

Summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Job description

Based out of MOD HQ Bristol Abbey Wood, an exciting opportunity has arisen within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) as a Lead Engineer/Section Head within Naval Authority Group (NAG).

The NAG is responsible for safety certification of MOD shipping and the provision of subject matter expert advice in the associated technical areas. As a lead engineer, you will provide safety certification for surface ships and submarines across key material hazard areas for Propulsion, Manoeuvring and Navigation Systems (PMNS).

This unique opportunity will also see you lead on the development of certification for Maritime Autonomous Systems, an exciting area at the forefront of technological development.

Due to the nature of role available, posts are Reserved for Sole UK Nationals.

Responsibilities

In addition to certification, as PMNS Section Head your responsibilities will include:

• The development of safety rules, processes, technical guidance and standards for your area and work closely with project teams and industry.
• Provision of professional technical advice, support and assurance on marine engineering systems to the Ship and Submarine OCs for all vessels throughout the CADMID Cycle.
• Acting as a senior engineering focal point to inform and advise on resolution of in-service issues, participating in or leading process safety audits and peer reviews for mechanical marine engineering equipment and systems as necessary.
• Keeping abreast of research and development in both military and commercial sectors fostering an informed and co-operative response to defence needs, informing the development strategy as necessary.
• Liaison with other Classification Societies on the development of mutually beneficial rules and regulation participating in technical committees as requested.
• Representing the Naval Authority Group on NATO and other national and international standing bodies as requested.

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or has the ability to achieve this within 12 months.
• Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification in a relevant Engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience of providing technical advice at a senior level and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes in multidisciplinary projects.
• Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience and application in Propulsion, Manoeuvring and Navigation Systems.

It would benefit your application if you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Member of a relevant Professional Engineering/Science Institute or equivalent body.
• Held a safety delegation or had responsibility for safety certification.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

• ECCF 2 Application of Analytical Techniques
• Leadership
• Communicating and influencing
