We are currently seeking a Specialist for our Customs Compliance team. This role strengthens the Commercial Logistics & Customs Compliance team’s performance by efficiently addressing customs process variances and issues, reporting to governments, processing invoices, analyzing customs and logistics related data, assisting other team members with ad hoc supply chain tasks, and supporting Digitization initiatives.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Assist and provide guidance to our Customs Broker and engage internal stakeholders to ensure our imports and exports are timely, efficient, and compliant with respect to the regulations of countries involved and internal policies.
  • Prepare export and import documentation to ensure timely release and delivery of orders often requiring collaboration with shippers, vendors, consignees, customs brokers, stakeholders etc.
  • Use SAP and other systems to print customs invoices, maintain customs broker partners in SAP, and verify that accurate and complete customs related EDI data is transmitted to carriers and brokers.
  • Review product description and end use of purchased goods, determining HS code, confirming origin, determining qualification of goods under global Free Trade Agreements, identifying the amount of any significant duties, countermeasures surcharges, and anti-dumping and countervailing duties.
  • Review tariff schedules, explanatory notes, and rulings and Collaborating with Customs Broker and internal contacts as required.
  • Determine tariff classification for all grades produced by NOVA in collaboration with Product Technology, monitoring SAP tariff classification data integrity, and assigning correct tariffs to new Manufacturer’s ID Numbers (MID’s) in our system.
  • Retrieve, analyze, and integrate internal SAP ERP shipment data, CBP ACE data, CBSA FIRMS data, customs broker data etc. to ensure data integrity, accurate reporting, and compliant imports and exports.
  • Act as backup in the completion of a weekly internal U.S. customs self-audit to confirm that the data reported to U.S. CBP is accurate.  Ensuring corrections are made within 10 business days, root causes are identified, and learnings are incorporated into procedures, training plans, and change management activities of site logistics, broker, and customs compliance teams to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Act as backup in the reporting on key performance indicators including number of liquidated damages, number of issues, number of Post Summary Corrections, etc. Sending KPI’s monthly and reviewing at quarterly business review meetings to optimize performance and compliance.
  • Adhere to procedures to ensure execution excellence and identifying improvement opportunities to strengthen procedures or adapt to changes in the business environment.
  • Manage annual process to create Certificates of Origin and providing input to TSCA certificate creation and renewal.
  • Update internal customs guides, tools, website, SharePoint libraries, etc. in the spirit of continuous improvement.
  • Respond to high volume of requests, including complex requests requiring research, engaging stakeholders as necessary expeditiously and within target timelines. Estimating the resource requirements of unplanned work and communicating scheduling conflicts and potential delays to stakeholders to enable prioritization of activities.
  • Provide back-up support to team members as required.

What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will possess a university degree in Business Management, Logistics, Operations Management or related education with 5-7 years of experience with customs compliance, logistics, and analysis and continued professional development or 10+ years combination of post-secondary education and related experience is required.

In addition, the successful candidate will have:

  • A fundamental understanding of Customs, Compliance and International Trade regulations and formalities.
  • A proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, engaging various stakeholders to solve problems.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail are critical to succeed in the role.
  • Strong organization skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/activities and ensure successful completion.
  • Proficient in MS Excel charts, pivot tables, conditional sum, data validation, and formulas containing multiple Excel functions. The ability to create and edit form controls, apply conditional formatting, and edit simple macros is desirable.
  • Ability to work efficiently and pursue opportunities to streamline/reduce waste.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of SAP, well developed Excel and analytical abilities, and a growth mindset.
