As a trusted source for journalists, thought-leaders, movement activists, researchers, and those wanting to know about trans people, we produce narratives about and for the trans community––accurately and reliably. At a time when disinformation about trans people is being used to undermine democracy and human rights, TransLash serves as a beacon of hope through the voices of our community that we share with the world.
TransLash is looking for a reliable and collaborative Social Media Manager to support shaping and implementing our strategy for storytelling and audience development on different platforms. The Social Media Manager will report to the Interim Director of Digital Media & Social.
The candidate must have experience running social channels for news organizations and should come prepared to share and develop ideas for new ways to effectively engage TransLash Media’s audiences on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X/Twitter, and emerging platforms.
Additionally, the candidate must have experience managing a minimum of two direct reports across time zones and be a champion for adopting and adhering to best practices in digital storytelling. This role requires a work schedule/availability during the hours of 9AM – 5PM Eastern, along with some evening and weekend availability as needs arise.
A paid test assignment will be given to candidates who are invited to a second interview round.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provide support to our Interim Director of Digital/Social Media on day-to-day social media management. This includes helping the team implement our brand identity across social channels; supporting the implementation of visual design strategies; and providing support on various tasks as needed.
- In concert with brand guidelines and voice, write social media copy; create graphics, videos, memes, etc.; and maintain social media calendar and posting schedule; schedule and publish approved content on social media channels.
- Ensure social media content aligns with channel objectives and strategies, brand voice and tone, and social media best practices.
- Collect and analyze social media data to create reports on key metrics such as engagement, reach, and conversions, and use insights to inform content strategy and optimize social media performance.
- Scan all podcast distribution channels and TransLash social accounts every week for timely listener reviews, and compiling documentation to be repurposed for promotional social graphics and funder reporting;
- Check TransLash email accounts daily and coordinating responses/escalating inquiries with appropriate team members within 48hrs of each correspondence;
- Scan TransLash social channels daily and elevating/responding to podcast series-specific feedback from followers;
- Supporting outreach to promote the TransLash zine in multiple relevant online communities, related call-for-submission campaigns, and providing misc. content and administrative support;
- Support media management and community management needs for the TransLash Media YouTube Channel. Duties will include ongoing SEO-driven tag maintenance for legacy and new content uploads, promptly reviewing and responding to comments, and caption corrections (utilizing YouTube’s caption editor, and uploading provided .SRT files);
- Meet regularly with the Interim Director of Digital & Social regularly to discuss monthly social content, outreach, and promotional priorities.
- Maintain internal processes and protocols related to community management and issue resolution. Develop responses to questions, comments, and issues, ensuring all responses use the appropriate brand voice and tone.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred;
- Minimum 3-5 years experience supporting daily social media accounts for a news organization, or supporting a fast-paced media brand that produces social media on a daily basis;
- Minimum 3 years experience serving LGBTQ+ audiences/communities/customers;
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a team coordination role (of at least two other people).
- Two years minimum experience with supporting podcast digital production (or can demonstrate aptitude in learning podcast programs and tools);
- You have demonstrated experience on the ins and outs of how to use Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, TikTok, Canva, Sprout Social, and YouTube for impact.
- You have advanced skills in graphic design using Canva.
- You have skills in Adobe Spark or other well-known graphic design software.
- You have a portfolio of applicable outputs including writing samples, and proof of graphics creation in Canva or other graphic design software.
- Can work efficiently and professionally with minimal oversight.
- You are quick on your feet and make strategic decisions.

- Community Building: Skillfully fosters a sense of community and belonging within the trans audience, while also reaching out to new communities to expand our reach and impact.
