Full-Time General Manager

Job Description

The New Group, one of New York’s leading Off-Broadway theaters, is seeking a GENERAL MANAGER.  The New Group is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. In addition to producing three annual productions, the organization’s New Group/New Works play and musical development program champions original works by emerging and established authors. The New Group also operates a variety of theater education programs that provide opportunities for artistically inclined middle and high school, college, and adult students. The New Group Off Stage celebrates work at the intersection of art, multimedia, and social engagement by showcasing some of today’s most compelling storytellers through web series, feature films, audio plays and more.

 

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the General Manager is responsible for overall production supervision and administration. The General Manager will work closely with the Founding Artistic Director and artistic team and will interface with all departments within the organization.  The General Manager will directly supervise the Company Manager/Assistant General Manager, and Production Manager. 

 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Provide on-site supervision and oversight for main stage productions, developmental readings, and production related functions for fundraising events
  • Create and monitor production and developmental reading budgets
  • Prepare, coordinate, and maintain season calendars with Production Manager and approve production schedules and activity
  • Supervise company management functions including artist services and company and house seat ticketing requests
  • Lead contract negotiations for authors, all other artistic personnel, and any outside producers/partners 
  • Maintain relationships with theatrical unions (AEA, SDC, USA, AFM/802)
  • Represent The New Group in collective bargaining negotiations with theatrical unions (Off-Broadway)
  • Ensure compliance with rehearsal and theatrical rental licenses and communicate with venue owners
  • Work with the senior management team to schedule and plan each season and develop strategic plans for the future

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Ambition to play an integral role as a producing leader 
  • Strong leadership skills to represent the institution both internally and externally
  • Outstanding judgment and an ability to make decisions in a timely fashion after consulting multiple stakeholders
  • Experience in managing staff and developing meaningful relationships with artists
  • Exceptional written/verbal communication and negotiating skills
  • Rigorous budgeting experience
  • Proactive planning and problem-solving skills and tenacious follow through
  • Exceptional organization and attention to detail
  • Experience working in performing arts management, including direct experience with union regulations, and contract negotiations     
  • Proven understanding of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, and a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across differences

This is a full-time exempt position available immediately. Salary range is $70,000-85,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes health, dental, vision, 403b retirement, and commuter benefit plans. The New Group operates as a hybrid remote and in person workplace. The General Manager will split their working time between the New Group administrative office, production venues, and their remote workplace.
