These positions are within our Process Engineering Team, which provides process design, process automation, operations engineering, process safety and environmental support to our production units at the Corunna, Moore, St. Clair River and Rokeby sites.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Develop project scope and process design for sustaining capital projects through NOVA’s Project Development and Implementation (PD&I) process. This may include, but is not limited to drawings, work packages, equipment specification, data sheets, technical reports, and engineering QA/QC. May support the unit in special projects.
  • Conduct technical assessments, risk assessments, feasibility assessments and calculations to optimize the design with respect to process safety/process risk, operability, reliability, and maintainability
  • Provide process engineering support to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of units to meet business needs.
  • Work collaboratively with our External Engineering Providers as NOVA’s discipline representative, to ensure efficient, timely and quality deliverables back to the NOVA project team
  • Work collaboratively with unit Operations and Maintenance teams to clarify scope, business case justification, business opportunities and potential solutions, engaging the unit Operators to ensure alignment of scope and project deliverables
  • Drive NOVA’s Nature into everything we do (Responsible, Passionate, Innovate, Collaborate)
  • Provide mentorship to other engineers

What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing facility. The candidate in this role will also be required to have their Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation through the PEO (or equivalent regulatory body).

  • Comprehensive working understanding of PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances for the purposes of project design
  • Process simulation experience
  • Experience with, including facilitation, of a variety of hazard/risk analysis techniques, such as HAZOP studies, SQRA’s, or other risk assessment techniques
  • Demonstrated background in engineering design within a hydrocarbon facility
  • Familiar with Management of Change (MOC) concepts in a plant setting
  • Understand and apply fit for purpose engineering into all designs
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own workload with minimal supervision, managing multiple projects and tasks in a dynamic teamwork environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to present or explain information using a variety of formal presentation tools & techniques, and influence without authority

The Following additional qualifications / experiences are considered an asset:

  • Previous formal mentoring experience
  • Plant support process engineering experience
  • Expertise in a specific area of process design, such as pumps, hydraulics, heat exchangers, overpressure relief design, or process simulations
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office software suite, Aspen Simulation Packages, Aspen Process Explorer, and SAP would be beneficial
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Operations, Maintenance, and Technical teams
  • Ability to contribute and be seen as an informal leader within the team is necessary. Ability to challenge their peers to ensure highest level of performance / quality from team
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills, willingness to take initiative

Location:

The NOVA Chemicals Manufacturing East Sites are located near Sarnia, Ontario. The Sarnia Sites focus on the production of ethylene and polyethylene and is recognized as a cornerstone of Ontario’s petrochemical industry.

Sarnia is situated on the south shore of Lake Huron at the headwaters of the St. Clair River, and just an hour from Detroit, Michigan, United States.
