The Challenge
We are looking for a senior engineer to join our Roadway Design team that produces and reviews roadway design plans, lighting, and electrical plans, and provides technical expertise to internal and external partners.
 
In this role you will:
    • Serve an advanced-level electrical engineer on our Lighting and Electrical Team.
    • Independently apply professional techniques and standards to evaluate and prepare our most complex major roadway lighting design projects.
    • Assist our Lighting and Electrical Team Lead in scheduling and budgeting.
    • Attend and lead project meetings.
    • Assist lower-level engineers in the design of our most complex lighting and electrical systems such as static weighing systems at truck weight stations, daytime/nighttime lighting designs for roadway tunnels with emergency power generation capabilities, automatic lighting system switching and automatic power system switching, and intelligent roadway lighting control systems.
    • Adjust assignments and modify procedures to deliver assignments on schedule and budget.
    • Assist in the coordination with GESC firms to review and design lighting and electrical systems to ensure that project schedules are met.
    • Respond to and assist lower-level engineers responding to requests from the Divisions, other NCDOT units, utility , and local governments.
    • Draft correspondence related to the development and review of lighting and electrical systems, policies, and procedures.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles, practices, and codes of electrical engineering related to the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of lighting, electrical systems, electro-mechanical controls, and power systems.
    • Experience in the development and review of lighting and electrical plans/details to determine compliance with NCDOT lighting & electrical guidelines, polices, electrical codes, modern electrical and lighting materials, laws, and ordinances pertaining to electrical systems.
    • Computer skills using photometric lighting design software to optimize lighting layouts and to apply appropriate methodologies to meet conductor sizing and voltage drop requirements in the electrical design of the lighting systems.
    • Computer skills in MicroStation and AGi32, or other photometric software used to prepare lighting and electrical designs.
    • Team leadership in the delivery of projects in a timely manner while managing multiple priorities and assignments.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to address complex lighting and electrical concepts with other higher-level professionals and train lower-level engineers.
    • Working knowledge of NCDOT and Roadway Design.
    • Ability to develop and maintain lighting and electrical guidelines, polices, procedures and standard operating procedures for the lighting team.
    • Ability to evaluate existing/proposed roadway sections to determine the justification for lighting using a cost-benefit analysis tool that determines the value to the public of a lighting system with consideration given to needs, benefits, and costs.
    • Able to assist in training lower-level engineers and Engineering Associates in the design, review, construction and testing of various lighting and electrical system components and submittals in accordance with NCDOT lighting policy and guidelines.
    • Ability to provide technical information and conduct studies.
    • Able to help local governments and others in the design/review of lighting and electrical systems associated with roadways.
    • Ability to make field inspections and advise Resident Engineers as to whether the contractor’s work is in conformance with the design plans and specifications.
    • Skills to physically test or direct others in the testing of completed lighting and electrical  work to assure compliance with the contract and to test electrical properties of circuits before acceptance of and payment for projects.
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
    • 4+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Note
    • We may require you to be registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
