Both Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and The Submarine Delivery Agency (The SDA) are offering exciting opportunities to join their teams.

If you have a range of mechanical engineering experience from sectors such as maritime, oil and gas, or manufacturing where you will have dealt with Auxiliary, Propulsion or Heavy Equipment and would love the chance to work with the UK’s leading Submarines or Surface Ships, please do not hesitate to apply.

As part of these vital roles, you will have unique access to the front line, supporting the work of the Royal Navy. You may be involved in keeping ships or submarines at sea, allowing them to perform their principle role through being responsible for managing the upkeep of principle naval assets. You may also be involved earlier in the Acquisition of equipment providing technical leadership to key aspects of large procurements.

In these roles you will be expected to lead and advise on technical problem solving, often coupled with appropriate management planning abilities to resolve complex engineering problems. You will be required to work with one or many types of systems/equipment’s including diesel generators, engines, navigation systems, domestic, grey and black water systems, fire fighting, air conditioning, hydraulics and high/low pressure air systems.

Please note that due the nature of security, some of these roles may be restricted to Sole UK Nationals only.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities will vary from role to role, but will include some of these listed:

o Identify and manage Marine Engineering risk whilst providing guidance on Marine Engineering issues
o Collect, collate and evaluate technical data, review technical equipment and systems and support, and take decision on these
o Solve complex systems problems and implement resolutions.
o Provide independent perspective on innovation and technology risk in the delivery of Military Capability.
o Review and update the engineering management plans
o Deliver on change, concessions and configuration management plan
o Develop engineering functional assessments of the programme and delivery status reports
o Review and action the design and build concessions
o Specify requirements for new capabilities
o Provide support engineering for a range of Marine Engineering Equipment and Systems
o Develop or assist with Design changes
o Support Safety Analysis
o Ensuring achievement of Naval Authority Certification
o Performance optimisation
o Interaction with contractors & original equipment manufacturers
o Support through maintenance periods and assist with fault finding, rectification and continuous improvement
o Documentation reviews and approval of supplier documentation
o Liaising with internal/external customers & suppliers, including liaising with the dock yard
o Setting standards, ensuring policies are complied with

What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or have the ability to achieve this within 12 months of appointment
• Mechanical Engineering background
• To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of mechanical equipment within Maritime environment or identify transferable skills

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Engineering experience on Maritime Propulsion systems including auxiliary propulsion and the supporting ancillaries
• Maritime experience, preferably in the Defence sector
• Previous experience of technical leadership and managing teams
