About the Role
The Construction Inspector – Roadway is responsible for inspecting roadway and sidewalk construction projects associated with City contracts and private developments. This role ensures compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract provisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting inspections in accordance with NCDOT standards
- Monitoring construction activities including grading, storm drainage, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and asphalt placement
- Performing quality control testing of materials
- Maintaining detailed daily reports and project documentation
- Ensuring proper soil erosion and sediment control measures
- Providing direction to contractors to ensure compliance
- Responding to public inquiries, concerns, and complaints
- Supporting various infrastructure inspection needs through cross-training
This position requires significant outdoor work in varying weather conditions and the ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, and lifting up to 25 lbs.

Qualifications

What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED with 1-3 years of roadway and sidewalk construction experience
- “OR” No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of roadway and sidewalk construction experience
- Valid Driver’s License
- Experience interpreting construction plans, diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and field stakeouts (must be clearly indicated on application)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Experience with Public Works construction projects
- NCDOT and ACI Level I Concrete Field Technician Certification (must attach with application)
- NCDOT Roadway QMS Certification
