NOVA Chemicals’ Technical Procurement is a matrix organization focused and resourced on four core competencies: Strategic Sourcing, Contract Management, Procurement Operations, and Growth.  We are looking for a dynamic, driven, agile individual to join our team as the Category Manager, Construction & Maintenance Services. Your primary responsibilities will be to lead Category Management Teams (CMT’s) in the development of enterprise-wide strategies with a focus on increasing value through identification of cost improvements and risk reduction.

Reporting to the Leader, Strategic Sourcing, you will work with your category leads, business leaders, key stakeholders and the rest of supply chain to prioritize high value category initiatives, that comprises the largest part of NOVA Chemicals’ third party spend.

The purpose of this role is to support NOVA Chemicals in building and maintaining a competitive advantage in the reliability of our manufacturing facilities across Canada and the United States.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Demonstrate overall results and total lifecycle value for the categories.
  • Lead the strategy development and strategic planning for assigned portfolio that leads to cost savings initiatives and supply risk mitigation in collaboration with a Business Leader.
  • Provide the technical and process expertise for successful execution of the full life cycle of category management activities.
  • Create corporate value by identifying long term category initiatives as well as participate in the development of short-medium term strategic sourcing strategies.
  • Ensure contract governance beyond contract formation and provide support to the data management team, business unit teams and category leads to maintain accurate contract status.
  • Work with the Contracts Management Team to develop and improve project contract strategies standards and practices.
  • Mentor resources located in multiple geographical locations as needed.
  • Work with peers and stakeholders to perform a supplier segmentation plan ensuring the execution of supplier relationship management. This role may be assigned multiple ownerships of key supplier relationships to manage.
  • Support the Strategic Sourcing category buyers through the sourcing process including supplier selection and negotiation for sourcing initiatives and capturing target cost savings.
  • Track and monitor all spend activity and for assigned category areas and determine proper action plan for all purchases that meet the Strategic Sourcing involvement threshold (e.g., strategically source, tactically source, user purchase, etc.).
  • Support the Strategic Sourcing buyers in the preparation of recommendations to the business on requirements, specifications and supplier selection.
  • Support the Contract Administrators/Strategic Sourcing Buyers execute Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) activities including supplier stratification/classification, governance, performance management and supplier development.
  • Collect and input data to report cost improvement and spend management for assigned categories.
  • Perform request for information, benchmark analysis and consolidate market intelligence for assigned categories and collaborate with the team to develop the report for key business stakeholders.
  • Provide category sourcing subject matter expertise to the associated business area and sourcing buyers and seek out expertise from business/function when necessary.
  • Work closely with buyers and stakeholders to ensure technical requirements are met and NOVA Chemicals’ interests are protected through compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Exhibit solid business and financial acumen to review and attest payments and summarize cost data.
  • Develop/interpret technical specifications and their application in an operations environment.

What We Are Looking For:

  • University graduate with 10+ years related experience and continued professional development or 14+ years combination of post-secondary education and related experience with continued professional development.
  • Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in MRO, Process Automation, Oils, Gases and Lubes, Capital Equipment are an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Strategic Sourcing within large organizations and in both Projects and Operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology.
  • Proven ability to develop category and sourcing strategies by identifying opportunity areas and value levers.
  • Ability to effectively direct and leverage sourcing spend in assigned category areas by leading enterprise wide cross-functional teams.
  • Experience managing and maintaining strong supplier relationships with a focus on safety and Responsible Care.
  • Strong leadership presence and negotiation/contract management experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with sourcing/spend systems data and analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills to coach and develop Sourcing Resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to lead high performance teams.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and report summation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience and ability to apply change management knowledge and expertise.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint and PowerPoint), proficiency in Purchase-to-pay tools (e.g., SAP MM, Ariba).
  • Ability to execute job responsibilities during period of moderate travel.

Additional Information:

  • This position will require 10%-20% travel with possible extended stays.
  • This position may be located at either our Corunna Site, near Sarnia, Ontario, Red Deer Executive Place, in Red Deer, Alberta or NOVA Head Office in Calgary, Alberta.
  • Cross border / international moves involving immigration will not be considered for this role
