The role of the Engineering Support Manager is to lead a small team undertaking planned and reactive maintenance, functional testing, diagnostics, repair and modifications to a wide range of in service weapons including Naval Guns on Maritime Platforms.

Defence Munitions receive store, maintain & issue a wide range of munitions that used by the UK armed forces to train, protect and serve anywhere in the world. Defence Munitions is part of the Weapons Operating Centre, which forms part of the Defence Equipment & Support Organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence. Defence Munitions Beith provides a range of Complex Weapon processing, storage and engineering.

In this role you will be required to be knowledgeable in the through life management of Complex Weapon systems and have a technical skill base in a relevant electrical and/or mechanical discipline.

As you will be interacting with a wide range of internal and external customers and stakeholders, both military and civilian, and including contractors, your strong communication, influencing and leadership skills combined with a calm, collected and collaborative, yet robust, manner are essential to success in this post.

Responsibilities

There are two specialisms that your skills and attributes may be suited to; these are:

Complex Weapons Processing Manager: Mechanical Production Manager

• Responsible for a team that undertakes; planned maintenance, functional testing, diagnostics, repair, modification of complex weapons which may include mechanical or electrical specialisations.
• Scheduling a range of processing activities to an agreed plan.
• Attend off site trials and support overseas operations where you will provide line management and leadership to multi-disciplined teams.
• You will ensure that the risk generated by activity in your area is as low as reasonably practicable and that a strong, positive Safety and Explosives Safety culture operates in the section.

Electrical Production Manager – Test Equipment Maintainer

• Responsible for the maintenance and calibration of the Spearfish Electrical special to type test equipment. SE1 is also responsible for the diagnostic and fault-finding activities associated with test equipment and weapon hardware.
• SE1 is responsible for representing DM Beith at the Replacement Automatic Test Equipment (RATE) meetings, providing advice on technical and health and safety issues.
• When required SE1 will cover staff absence and will be responsible for the delivery of production objectives for the Spearfish Weapon. SE1 is to work with colleagues and their respective teams to achieve common DM objectives.
• SE1 is to ensure that all activities undertaken comply with legislation, MOD regulations, specified quality standards and appropriate processes and procedures.

Management of staff is likely to constitute a significant part in both roles.

You will ensure that your work areas meet all statutory and mandatory MOD requirements in respect of Explosives Safety, Occupational Safety, Health and Environment; Quality, Fire and facilities management.

You will be expected to promote and actively encourage continuous improvement, lean processing initiatives across your area and a flexible approach towards operating within a multi-disciplined team. Good communication skills are paramount to achieve the diverse range of outputs.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Mechanical OR Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship at Level 3 in a suitable subject (or equivalent).

It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Working with controlled documentation.
• Ordinance Munitions and Explosives (OME) or preferably working on a Complex Weapon System.
• Implementation of SSOW including the management of Risk and COSHH assessments.
• Working within a Lean Improvement environment.

The Integrated Logistics (iLog) Function is the integrating Function for Support within DE&S, responsible for the development, management and delivery of in-service support for our front-line command customers. The iLog Function consists of around 2,900 personnel, both civil servants and military, and with a wide range of disciplines ranging from operations management and supply chain management, technical through-life support and logistics delivery, to modelling and analysis.
