In this unique position, your role will be the ‘lead engineer’ for two early Category A projects. The primary project, currently in the assessment phase, is for the procurement of a large missile defence radar. A secondary Category A project, currently in its early conceptual stage, will establish the concepts of deploying ground-based air defence anywhere in the world. In each project, you will be using your engineering experience to formulate engineering approaches that are both achievable and deliver the capability required.

You will be responsible for a team of five engineers initially, which may expand, and will report into the Project Management structure and/or the Delivery Team Chief Engineer, for both roles.

Please note that, due to security requirements, this role is open to sole UK nationals only. The successful candidate must hold, or be willing to go through SC Clearance, prior to starting in their post, and must be willing and able to go through Developed Vetting in-post.

Responsibilities

This is a multifaceted role, in which the responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
• Managing engineering risks associated with purchasing complex military equipment
• Reviewing and providing engineering advice on the delivery of infrastructure to support each project ensuring useable capability is available for front line forces.
• Ensuring that operational analysis is correctly scoped and conducted
• Developing, maintaining and delivering against Engineering Management Plans (EMP), developed to meet the needs of all project stakeholders.
• Delivering engineering products / services as set out in the EMP, specifically managing the acquisition safety and requirements management needs.
• Leading the development of the test and evaluation strategy for the projects
• Providing technical leadership to solve complex problems with innovative solutions that enhance capability
• On behalf of DE&S, acting as the intelligent and informed customer in Interfaces with industry and the Front Line Command
• Providing governance, assurance and advice on the complex projects to guide and influence senior leaders, scientists and decision makers.
• Working closely with industry partners, both nationally and internationally (please note that international travel is a requirement of the post)

What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A minimum of Level 6 (e.g. BEng) qualification in Engineering (or suitable and relevant experience)
• Experience of Engineering Management from within the Defence sector
• A background of managing technical risk within a Defence project

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• An Electronics/Electrical/Software qualification
• Experience of radar or related sensor technologies
• Experience working within an FMS (Foreign Military Sales) environment
• Knowledge of ground based sensing of the space domain
