The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), was formed in April 2017 and assumed status as an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence in April 2018 and employing approximately 1,300 highly qualified professionals. As a standalone entity within the MOD, the SDA has been created as a high-performing organisation, bringing together existing expertise with heightened managerial, commercial and procurement capability to ensure the excellence and cost-efficient delivery of the UK’s nuclear submarine assets for decades to come.
Within the SDA, the Dreadnought Alliance programme has been established to deliver the successor to the fleet of Vanguard Class SSBNs by replacement with the Dreadnought Class SSBN in support of Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD).
The Dreadnought Alliance is seeking a Head of Commercial to be responsible for the contract management and contract placement with Rolls-Royce and BAES on the Dreadnought Nuclear Submarine Programme.

Responsibilities
As the Head of Commercial you will provide advice, guidance and direction to Alliance Management Board members and liaise with the Head of Commercial and Commercial Director in the SDA. You will be required to provide evidence and management information to confirm you are working within the commercial delegation, and act as a mentor and coach to members of the team to increase existing knowledge, experience and Qualification levels to that required for commercial delegations to be given.
Working with peers across the Alliance, you will gain an understanding of their requirements and how these fit in with the Alliance’s overall aims and objectives, whilst being responsible for negotiating contracts and placing contract amendments up to the value of your delegation. The maximum delegation for this grade is £100M, but delegation is conditional on achieving MCIPS level 6, a pass at the Cabinet Office Assessment centre and demonstration of the requisite skills and experience.
Essentially to be successful you will be able to demonstrate:
• Experience of working on large complex contracts
• A track record of driving innovation, through changing ways of contracting and team management skills
• The ability to motivate and mentor staff
• Strong leadership / negotiating/ customer management/ team management skills and experience
• Commercial management and expert level commercial licence, with ability to achieve MCIPS level 6 within a reasonable timescale
• Willingness to attend within a reasonable period the Cabinet Office Assessment Centre achieving the minimum pass level.
The following would be desirable:
• Experience of MOD acquisition and contracting
• Experience of working within a major UK investment project, involving both public and private sector organisations
• Knowledge of the UK Defence Sector and Submarines Enterprise
• Experience of working with the Single Source Contracts Regulations
The role can be either based in Barrow-in-Furness or Bristol, however routine travel between both locations will be required to support the business need of the programme.

Internal Applicants: Internal candidates will be eligible for full relocation
