Position Summary: For this position, you’ll need to have strong all-around skills as our most senior developer, working with a blend of additional in-house developers and contractor-based resources for design and additional engineering horsepower when needed. This means knowledge of multiple frameworks across the full stack. We develop in Laravel, with multiple JavaScript front-end tools, leverage Tailwind CSS components for design, and host our applications in Heroku and AWS.
We develop software in support of Points of Light’s mission to inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action that changes the world. Our flagship product, Engage, is the most comprehensive database of volunteer opportunities around the world for individuals to discover and connect with and provides nonprofits the ability to post and manage event sign-ups. Additionally, we build products alongside our strategic partners with the goal of recognizing and rewarding individual’s volunteer efforts.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of bringing consumer internet products from idea to market, including substantial hands-on engineering experience, a background in delivering data-driven user experiences, and successful experience in both workflow-based digital applications and complex backend data handling solutions. Also key to this position is strong knowledge of UI/UX best practices, and comfort in a fast changing and evolving industry.
Position Functions and Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the most senior technical lead and guide the organization’s strategic choices for data modeling, architecture and infrastructure for our digital products.
- Provide oversight and hold responsibility for the performance and stability of our digital products (uptime, functional features, etc.), including maintenance of code base.
- Manage a small team of internal developers and contractors.
- Direct, collaborate with, and mentor engineers to solve complex issues and deliver high-quality work.
- Work with Product Owner to prioritize work and ensure the engineering team can accomplish goals, removing roadblocks as needed.
- Lead the process for clearly documenting and publishing documentation on our digital services and APIs so that external parties and potential partners can collaborate in support of our mission.
- Work with the technical team to evangelize our mission and collaboration opportunities among technical community.

- Entrepreneurial through experience and/or mind-set.
- Direct experience with project management, agile product development, and selecting and managing technology vendors.
- Ability to engage, understand and discuss technical approach and architectural decisions.
- A technical background including technologies such as PHP, relational databases, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other common open-source technologies strongly desired.
- Ability to clearly communicate product plans, benefits and results, as appropriate, to a spectrum of audiences, from fellow non-technical colleagues to end-users in the marketplace.
Requirements
- Education: BS or MS degree, preferably in CS or related technical/analytical field
- Experience:
- 7+ years experience working to deliver successful and innovative consumer internet products.
- 3+ years leading and managing high performance product, design and/or engineering teams
- Experience in launching products within an affiliated organization, or similar distributed environment a plus.
