Founded in 1994, Outward Bound Costa Rica offers a range of experiential education programs to high school, college students, and adult participants that promise challenging physical activities across Costa Rica and Panama with a focus on personal development, leadership, and cultural immersion.
The Communications Office is a small, collaborative team responsible for all communications, sales, marketing and customer service tasks organization-wide. Staffers are charged with increasing course participation across all target audiences and ensuring excellent customer service communication to prospective students and families, to families of students currently on course, and to alumni and partners.
Currently, 78% of our organizational staff are local Costa Rican ranging from director, instructor, to support staff-level roles. JOB DESCRIPTION
The Media & Marketing Manager plays a crucial role in the Communications Office and is responsible for successfully marketing Outward Bound Costa Rica and its programs internationally through various social media outreach methods, maintaining and updating the OBCR website, replying to initial inquiries via email, researching 3rd party sites for collaboration, updating all course pictures and descriptions, creating new content on all social media channels and maintaining or establishing new relationships with local and international media, bloggers, news outlets, and publications.
This role focuses on extensive external communication and essential digital aptitude. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal English skills, be conversant in Spanish, have strong attention to detail, and proven success in marketing, social media content and writing. Experience in DSLR photography and videography is a strong plus.
The Media & Marketing Manager reports directly to the Director of Marketing & Communications. Hours are 9am to 5pm with compensated on-call weekends during high season from June to August and limited travel. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MEDIA & MARKETING MANAGER:
SALES & ADMINISTRATIVE
- Manage all initial inquiry replies and A/B test initial replies towards improving response rates—this includes across Open Enrollment, Gap Year & Semester, Girl Scouts, and occasionally Custom Courses inboxes
- Answer and make phone calls for follow-up purposes to interested participants
- Maintain current notes and CRM records in Streak and Salesforce
- Assist in processing and reviewing Enrollment Forms, where needed, in collaboration with the Enrollment & Outreach Manager
- Contribute to planning/strategy meetings with the Communications Team
- Design each year’s course catalog, schedules, and pricing sheets for all program types: Girl Scouts, Open Enrollment, Gap Year & Semester, and Custom
- Rotate on-call and flight responsibilities throughout the year (especially during the summer high season)
SOCIAL MEDIA
- Draft, finalize, and schedule social media content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., and serve as the organization’s “voice” across these platforms
- In collaboration with Comm Office team members, run social media LIVE sessions around peak enrollment times and plan presentation or topic content relevant to upcoming programs
- Proactively liaise with students and outdoor field staff to obtain photos, videos, and content for social media
- Take a headshot of every arriving student and obtain at least one group photo
WEBSITE, SEO, & EMAIL MARKETING
- Develop and lead strategies for online marketing and advertising including Google Ads, third-party referral sites, and more
- Boost website visits by tracking Google Analytics and leading Search Engine Optimization efforts
- Update website as needed using WordPress and beginner HTML coding as needed
- Serve as primary copywriter for communications materials
- Develop and maintain Outward Bound Costa Rica’s blog—draft article content or summaries of groups on course.
- Draft parent update emails to inform them on how their son or daughter is doing on course with photo highlights—then send to Enrollment & Outreach Manager/Comm Director for final approval
- Develop targeted marketing and outreach newsletters and e-blasts to new and existing audiences to maximize program participation
- Design materials for print and web as needed
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Develop and lead public relations strategies to generate widespread brand awareness and boost enrollment.
- Draft and distribute press releases for Outward Bound Costa Rica students to garner coverage in local media outlets.
- Maintain alumni ambassador database and develop strategies to encourage increased, long-term communication with Outward Bound Costa Rica.
PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES
- 1-3+ years professional experience in marketing with responsibility for social media, recruitment outreach/engagement, public relations communications, Google Analytics and design
- Experience in managing one or more interns
- Proven customer service and administration skills
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field
- Strong organization and project management skills
- Proven experience managing multiple social media platforms and ability to generate innovative ideas to expand online presence
- Motivated to initiate and lead projects
- Creative and professional writing skills
- Design skills
- Conversant in Spanish
- Proficient in Microsoft Office & Excel; HTML, WordPress, and Google Analytics
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro) or similar platform
- Fluency with Apple computer systems
- Experience with photo and video platforms
- Experience with MailChimp and Salesforce or similar platforms
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
- Resilience and a strong desire to live abroad long-term
- Willingness and ability to live and work at a rainforest base—living in close quarters in a shared house with max 4 other amazing staff members and work at an on-base office with balcony view
- At least one year living, working or studying outside of your home country
- Fluent in English and Spanish language skills (intermediate/conversational ability or above strongly preferred but not required)
- Personal interest in the outdoors, experiential education, and the mission of Outward Bound Costa Rica
- Creative mind with the ability to think of a fresh marketing or campaign ideas to pitch
- Superb attention to detail
- Strong time management skills with ability to multi-task and stay focused despite regular interruption
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
- Positive attitude, good work ethic, and sense of humor
- Tenacity and flexibility
- Comfort in living in a more rustic and tropical environment compared to the United States, EU, or other (the rainforest base is at elevation in the Central Valley—so temps range between cold 50s at night to 70s during the day)
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- Monthly salary plus annual bonus
- Travel insurance coverage, preventative medical stipend, and additional incidental coverage through INS (the local insurance provider of Outward Bound Costa Rica)
- 30 days paid vacation plus 4 days throughout each year for visa renewal, comp days issued for any overtime work (primarily during our June to August high season)

- Private bedroom in a furnished 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom shared house on the OBCR main base located east of San Jose in the rainforest mountains of San Ramon de Tres Rios
- All utilities included (water, electricity, and wireless internet)
- Access to Outward Bound Costa Rica courses and equipment for personal use when available
- Use of Manuel Antonio beach base and private cabina when approved by the Program Director and Director of Communications
