Job description

If you are an experienced Electrical Engineer with a passion for the intriguing world of salvage, then this could be the ideal opportunity for you. DE&S, Salvage and Marine Operations, is the lead across the MoD for the provision of marine salvage and emergency response. Our team of specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV Pilots and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations.

Our operations are varied and include: salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering support to rectify defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas.

We are a flexible, highly trained and multi-skilled team who are ready to respond at short notice worldwide. We provide very exciting opportunities for global travel, recently sending our experienced team on deployments including Singapore, Japan and Bahrain.

Applicants will need to have a proven background and qualifications in Electrical Engineering; DE&S will provide you with the necessary training and help you on your journey to becoming an experienced operator.

Responsibilities

The SALMO team at Marine Salvage Unit (North) are looking for a experienced Salvage Electricians who will act as the electrical safety focal point and be responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of electrical maintenance and supervision both ashore and afloat.

You will have the opportunity for regular deployments within the UK, abroad and afloat, leading as a focal point of the salvage team instilling best practice in operations as well as the shore-based management role.
Duties include equipment preparation, operational planning and documentation, Safe systems of work, HSE regulation and system maintenance plus associated review.

This is a Safety Delegated post and includes the ongoing development and maintenance of the Safety Case, standard operating procedures and safety management systems. You may on occasion, be called upon to engage in other diverse activity to support both SALMO and wider Defence outputs.

This Assignment is subject to Retained Grade Terms and Conditions. The Terms and conditions within the SALMO team differ from the DE&S standard TACOS and are detailed in the SALMO Retained Grade handbook which is currently under revision.
In order to be successful in this role you must be fit to pass and maintain a:
• 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical
• HSE Dive Medical. If you have no prior commercial diving experience, you will also be required to undertake a dive aptitude test which will be funded by SALMO
• Due to the nature of the projects involved, this post is open to Sole UK Nationals Only.
• You will be required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
• You will be expected to work overtime as and when required in support of operational commitments.
• You will be required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of the base to which you are appointed
• Hold a Valid Driving Licence

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• STCW regulation III/6 (Electro-Technical Officer) OR STCW Marine Engineering Qualifications Minimum III/1 (Engineering Officer of The Watch) OR
A relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Electronic Engineering e.g. Degree/HNC/HND/Apprenticeship/RN Technical Qualification
• Qualify as an HSE surface supplied diver within 12 months of appointment
• Be fit to pass and maintain an annual HSE Dive Medical and biannual ENG1 Medical
• Relevant Seagoing or Offshore experience

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• HSE Commercial Air Diver/Supervisor
• Relevant experience in a Marine environment
• Marine Ops &/or Salvage Experience
• Hold Electrical Qualifications; 18th Edition
