Full-Time Visiting Research Specialist

The Bongarzone lab in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking highly energetic and organized applicants for a full-time Visiting Research Specialist position. This role will involve overseeing the maintenance of a biomedical laboratory which has a large component of transgenic mouse colonies and participating in both scientific research and management of the lab. Our research focus is molecular and cellular mechanisms of lysosomal genetic diseases and experimental procedures include molecular and cellular biology, histology, microscopy and behavioral tests.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

1) Carry out mouse husbandry, colony maintenance, genotyping using PCR and other methodologies, updating mouse colony records.

2) Maintain inventory of lab supplies and chemicals.

3) Ordering lab supplies and maintaining laboratory stocks.

4) Standardize and systematize comprehensive laboratory protocols while maintaining accurate records of the work performed.

5) Preparation and implementation of general laboratory maintenance protocols (e.g. safety, training, waste management, animal, etc.).

6) Ensure that laboratory procedures comply with all safety requirements.

7)Supervise and train new graduate and undergraduate students.

8) Test, optimize and implement both new and existing methods/techniques.

9) Collaborate with the PI and other lab members to prepare or perform experimental procedures in molecular biology, immunocytochemistry, cell culture, animal behavior, and transcardial perfusion.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications: Past experience in mouse husbandry and colony genotype and maintenance is an advantage. Enthusiasm for learning and gaining research and lab management experience, and the ability to coordinate and supervise others effectively are the most critical requirements of the position. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and organized, and strong communication skills are a must.

 

This position requires 3 years of previous research experience, and at minimum a Bachelor degree in biological sciences, preferably in neuroscience, physiology or an equivalent discipline.
