The Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a Visiting Research Associate II to support research activities for two NIH-funded studies while based in the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (CDIS). Founded in 2017, CDIS seeks to advance implementation science research, practice, and education, in partnership with communities, to reduce health disparities in Chicago, the United States, and globally.

Floreciendo is a sexual and reproductive health program adapted for Latina teens and their female caregivers. In partnership with community-based organizations in the Chicagoland area, we are conducting a pilot optimization trial of the adapted intervention using the multiphase optimization strategy framework (MOST). We will also collect implementation data. This study is funded by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development. The Research Associate will devote 50% effort to this study as Project Director.

IMAGE is an HIV/STI prevention sexual and reproductive health program culturally tailored for Black girls and their male caregivers. The IMAGE program is being evaluated in a two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT). IMAGE is funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The Visiting Research Associate II will devote 50% effort to this study as Assistant Project Director.

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Floreciendo:
Conceptualize, initiate, and execute research goals for each project. Monitor study developments and define, create, and implement new research procedures based on study needs.
Lead weekly research study meetings and oversee presentation of weekly updates on participant recruitment, retention, engagement, and randomization/enrollment.
Oversee randomization process and liaise with partner organizations to deliver interventions according to protocol.
Assist in creating, implementing, and revising data collection tools and procedures, including in REDCap and UIC Box.
Support with new IRB protocols and maintenance of UIC IRB approvals.
Lead and support on initial training and ongoing support of facilitators, including through observation of interventions.
Manage the approach of participants through coordination with community partner organization staff.
Manage the process of recruiting, tracking, and assessing participants for enrollment and follow-up, including making contact with parent/guardians (for minors).
Administer STI testing procedures, including urine sample collection and processing.
Oversee the observation of workshops and support of facilitators in achieving fidelity.
Supervise junior research staff, students, and/or volunteers on study tasks (e.g., participant recruitment).
Serve as the primary liaison between community partner organizations and the research team, including building new relationships and maintaining existing partnerships.
Lead and support quantitative and qualitative data collection, entry/verification, and analysis.
Support with curriculum and training updates, as needed.
Coordinate leadership meetings—i.e., Community Advisory Council meetings and Data Safety and Monitoring Board meetings.
Organize efforts to disseminate research findings.
Assist with or complete sponsor-related reports on study progress, including in ClinicalTrials.gov.
Support with research study finances, including through coordination with the Business Manager.

IMAGE:
Recruit, track, and assess participants for enrollment in research
Conduct informed assent/consent procedures with youth and adult participants
Conduct research interviews with youth and adult participants
Assist with STI testing procedures including urine sample collection and processing
Become proficient in intervention curricula including content, process, group management procedures, and data collection; Deliver the interventions as needed
Follow clinical protocols to assess safety if participants report harm to self, others, or abuse
Compile, organize, enter, and verify data
Provide assistance with IRB applications
Assist as needed with literature searches, measure and protocol development, and curriculum adaptation
Contribute material, analyze and prepare results, and assist in the writing and submission of research findings for publications, conference presentations, and grants.
Contribute to new grant proposals and assist in submission
Conduct study and CDIS-related activities and tasks as needed

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science or related field required.
  • A minimum of one year related research experience.
  • Knowledge of research concepts, practices and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, public health, social sciences or related field
  • Master’s degree in psychology, public health, social sciences or related field
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience coordinating a research study, including supervisory experience
  • Experience working with Federal Regulations and IRBs
  • Knowledge of research concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Experience in the collection, verification and/or management of data
  • Ability to travel to multiple work sites and comfort working in the community setting
  • Ability to work autonomously and complete job responsibilities independently
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong professional references
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other related software
  • Experience working with youth and/or community based organizations
  • Experience in implementation science
  • Proficiency in REDCap

 

Working Conditions
Currently hybrid work status. General office environment approximately 1-2 times weekly (in-person requirements may change with time). Study activities will occur at sites in the community (e.g., homes, libraries, schools, etc.) and at community partner organizations.  Candidates must be willing to travel throughout the city to these locations. Some program activities will occur in the evenings and on the weekends. Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer keyboards.
