The Challenge
We’re looking for an experienced Survey Engineering Technician III to serve as our Survey Party Chief.
In this role, you will:
Perform preliminary field surveys, including topographical terrain modeling, boundary locations, and utility locations.
Conduct property deed search and process raw data files for importing into GeoPak for mapping
Perform highway construction stakeout duties, including edge of pavement stakeouts, drainage stakeouts, slope staking, finish pavement grades, curb & gutter stakeouts, monolithic island layouts, mast arm footings, proposed right of way monuments, and applicable easements.
Calculate and set up road templates using Data collectors.
Perform GPS control surveys using Trimble equipment.
Review and check work performed by technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT teams.
Review roadway plans by private engineering firms for coordinate geometry accuracy.
Check typical sections and R/W offsets.
Schedule and prioritize workload with minimal supervision.
Resolve design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with Engineers.
What You Bring
Experience with surveying equipment, instruments, levels, data collectors, and GPS equipment.
Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans, and performing highway construction stakeouts.
Computer experience using laptops, iPads/tablets for field data collection, Microsoft Office, and drafting software.
Ability to apply NCDOT safety programs to operations and to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites, including traffic, heights, weather extremes, and climbing rough/uneven terrain.
Communications skills to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner.
Engineering experience to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
A general knowledge of surveying methods and procedures is preferred.
Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing.
Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing and inspection duties.
Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline, and
3+ years progressive technician experience; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
