GBLS seeks a staff attorney to join the Employment Law Unit. The attorney will engage in advocacy to advance the workplace rights and economic well-being of low-wage, predominantly immigrant, workers through strategies that include direct legal representation, community-based lawyering in partnership with and on behalf of grassroots worker organizations, litigation (individual, group, and class action), and systemic legislative and administrative advocacy to achieve broad-based policy changes. This position is funded in part by the Metrowest Worker Center/Casa del Trabajador/Casa do Trabalhador (“Casa”). Casa is based in Framingham, MA; the position will require some work on-site at Casa’s office in Framingham or other locations in the Metrowest area, as well as allow the option for hybrid remote work.

Areas of focus for the position will include individual and group legal representation for immigrant workers, as well as support for Casa’s organizational, staff, and member leadership development. Substantive areas of work will involve wage theft, labor-related immigration rights (U and T visas, and other options for immigration relief connected to enforcement of workplace rights), health and safety rights including policy advocacy to increase access to workers’ compensation benefits and access to medical care for injured workers, and rights to sick leave and family & medical leave.

Qualifications: The attorney must (1) be admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, admitted elsewhere and able to practice in Massachusetts under SJC Rule 3.04, or planning to take the next available Massachusetts Bar; (2) have 0 – 3 years of legal experience; (3) have a commitment to community lawyering and advancing workers’ rights; and (4) have excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is helpful but not required. The position may involve attending evening or weekend meetings to accommodate workers’ schedules.

Salary is based on union scale with a starting salary range between $60,000 to $63,000 depending on experience. GBLS provides excellent benefits, a retirement contribution, a student loan repayment assistance plan for eligible attorneys, and generous Paid Time Off.
