Senior Business Risk Officer, Global Custody

Role Description:

This role is responsible for the ongoing independent oversight and challenge of day-to-day risk management activities, client and product risk assessments and risk reporting for the award-winning Asset Servicing & Digital Business Line (ASD), with a focus on Global Custody. This is a second line of defence role; the Business Risk Officer supports the oversight of all risks, translating this into a meaningful assessment of the overall business risk profile. Central to this role will be an ability to connect elements of the risk profile and articulate these in a way that influences the business to own appropriate action to identify, assess, monitor and mitigate risk.

This is a fantastic opportunity to help drive the future of custody. BNY Mellon’s vision is to be the custody partner of choice for large asset owners and managers delivering solutions that help clients protect their investor portfolios, optimize their efficiency and maximize their opportunities across diverse assets pools and global markets. Working alongside product managers, and providing real-time challenge and expertise, you can help deliver a seamless, consistent, holistic and superior client experience at scale whenever and wherever a client invests.

A strong commercial mindset, understanding of drivers of risk in the securities servicing industry, and an ability to build relationships across the lines of defense are key to success. You will learn from the best in the business and be part of the transformation of global custody, including the development of digital assets.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Engage with the Global Custody Product team, building relationships and driving first line ownership.
  • Support the assessment, monitoring and reporting on risks inherent to business activities, including fiduciary, reputational, business and strategic risks.
  • Provide Risk Oversight of new and modified Products and other business initiatives including Digital Asset Custody. Advise on effective risk mitigation strategies and ensure implementation.
  • Support the establishment of the Business Risk Appetite, and contribute to its development, including metrics to monitor adherence.
  • Be accountable for the business line’s adherence to the Operational Risk Management Framework, in collaboration with Operational Risk Officers.
  • Be accountable for the assessment, monitoring and reporting of financial risks inherent to business activities, in collaboration with Financial Risk Officers. Additionally, demonstrate a sound working knowledge of credit, third party, resiliency, technology and compliance risks; and outline market, liquidity and model risk to identify where it arises.
  • Build and share a knowledge of the market, commercial, and competitive drivers with the team; and use it actively in discussions with the business.
  • Collaborate to develop a strong organizational risk culture and contribute to developing the function’s effectiveness as a second line to the business.
  • Drive 1LoD ownership, including articulating the value of managing risk (not just policy compliance), influencing the 1LoD to provide consistent quality output.
  • Develop productive relationships with other risk teams and partner functions, such as Risk and Compliance, with opportunities to work on larger, cross-line of business activities.  Provide comprehensive updates/escalation and/or reporting to all stakeholders.
  • Contributes to the achievement of team objectives as they evolve, and as the Line of Business changes to achieve their strategic goals.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 10+ years of total work experience preferred.

Primary Location: New York, Pittsburgh, other US locations may be considered
