Full-Time Robotics Engineer

Job Description

Do you want to work with a fast-growing technology startup focused on increasing efficiency in agriculture? Do you want to work with robots and the latest in computer vision and machine learning tech on a daily basis?

Headquartered in Seattle, we are seeking an energetic, hands-on, team-oriented and responsible individual to fill a full-time Robotics Engineer position as part of our Robotics team. In this role, you will be working with all aspects of iUNU robotic projects across the full product development life cycle, including planning, design, development, testing, field deployment, and fleet monitoring. This position requires an understanding of how to architect a robotic system based on mechanical, electrical, software, controls, and non-technical (ex. customer) requirements and the ability to convert a solid theoretical design into a robust, functional, physical product.

Candidates should be familiar with industry standards of designing and implementing robotics software stacks for both mobile and static robotic devices, with an emphasis on the use of embedded microcontrollers, single-board computers, NVIDIA edge devices, and other mobile computing platforms to orchestrate autonomous data capture. Additionally, ideal candidates will have an in-depth understanding of designing robust and safety-critical systems autonomous systems in harsh environments.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and implementing robotic software stacks on both embedded micro-controllers and single-board Linux computers
  • Designing and implementing real-time motion control systems for robotic scanners
  • Working collaboratively with other robotics, mechanical, and computer vision engineers to drive proper outcomes of LUNA robotics system as a whole
  • Research, develop, and integrate the latest sensor technology into LUNA robots
  • Program high-level robotics tasks with ROS in C++ and Python, and additionally work with real-time operating systems on an embedded micro-controller level
  • Design and implement large-scale fleet management frameworks across all LUNA customers
  • Contribute, maintain, and improve upon autonomous robot operation
  • Work in an Agile SCRUM environment with other members of the robotics team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related technical field with typically a minimum of 3 years of related experience
  • Solid understanding and application of principles, concepts, theories, and techniques in robotic systems
  • Experience converting non-technical inputs into hard product requirements and finally into the right solution for the customer
  • Ability to quickly turn a finalized design into a physical prototype by producing engineering drawings, sourcing suppliers, working through procurement challenges, and leading final assembly on compressed timelines
  • Ability to write clear and comprehensive technical documentation
  • Leadership skills
  • Detail-oriented with excellent critical thinking, communication, and time management skills
  • Data-driven problem-solving skills to troubleshoot, triage, and fix mechanical, electrical, and software issues within production, design, and manufacturing of robotic systems

Preferred

  • Experience with STM32 series micro-controllers
  • Experience with FreeRTOS
  • Deep math and statistics background
  • Inverse kinematics experience
  • Experience with sensor fusion methods (ie. Kalman or particle filtering)
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related technical field
  • Prior robotics hardware implementation experience
  • Experience with industrial design, DFA, DFM
  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing practices and operating associated hardware
  • Experience working within an early/growth-stage startup team
  • Ability to read an electrical schematic or PCB layout
  • Basic experience with Python, C++ and Linux environments using command-line interfaces
  • Experience in low- to medium-volume manufacturing environments involving large products
  • Six Sigma training / certification
  • Experience designing and analyzing parts and assemblies in an industry CAD package (preferably SolidWorks)
