Job Description
- Provide basic engineering functions for the Roadside Environmental Rest Area team assisting and providing technical expertise in the gathering of engineering data, field information, and tech support required for construction of the statewide rest area system.
- Provide basic civil engineering functions for NCDOT’s Roadside Environmental team’s vertical construction projects.
- Conduct field engineering data investigations related to design, development, review, permitting, construction, maintenance, operations, or repair of, projects and their potential environmental and safety impacts.
- Provide engineering plan reviews for completeness, compatibility, and compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes, and design needs.
- Make recommendations to senior engineers/managers on project concerns/issues.
- Prepare and review contract specifications of other engineers to meet desired compliance with engineering principles standards, codes, design, and statues.
- Provide invoice review and approvals for statewide rest area purchase order contracts submitted by contractors to determine acceptability for payment.
- Ensure work is done per engineering drawings and NCDOT specifications.
- Apply engineering expertise and judgment in statewide field collection of rest area construction data based on NCDOT and FHWA guidelines.
- In conjunction with NCDOT teams, private companies, and contractors, evaluate new technologies and methodologies for improved site design and building engineering.
- Provide specialized engineering design and judgment regarding every phase of rest area construction as they occur on statewide roadway construction and rehabilitation improvement projects.
- Document results of construction inspections, maintenance evaluations, review of invoices, and reporting of project activities.
- Provide responsive action to customer comments and complaints regarding improper operation and maintenance of the State’s 60 rest area facilities.
- Undertake special projects under the direction of the section engineer to resolve issues and problems involving rest areas usually in cooperation with other concerned agencies.
- Assist in meetings and periodic inspections on related projects and studies.
- Provide research reports as requested.
- Tackle other rest area/welcome center related projects.
- Experience assisting and providing technical expertise in gathering of engineering data and field information required for design, construction and maintenance of the statewide rest area system based on NCDOT and FHWA guidelines.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and requirements for water and sewer utility design.
- Experience evaluating design plans and providing recommendations to consultant architects and engineers on plan and contract development.
- Experience in on-site field inspections evaluating design criteria and application of engineering knowledge and judgment of field inspections of existing and newly constructed facilities.
- Experience reviewing invoices for statewide rest area purchase order contracts submitted by contractors to determine acceptability for payment.
- Bachelors degree in Engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- You may be required to register as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
