Temporary Remote Senior Science Writer: 6-month project-based position

Position Description:
You will be working closely with a busy and outgoing entrepreneur who runs a company that assists environmental organizations in achieving both their social and environmental outcomes. We are looking for an experienced report writer with a background in science, preferably 6+ years of writing scientific and foundation reports. This position will take the lead on editing reports, beautifying documents, and creating a formal tone within reports that are foundation-level documents. The Senior Science Writer will also come in as a collaborator with the business.
Much of this work will focus on creating reports that tell a story, explaining qualitative analysis results and proposed actions. This includes projects such as Lacy Consulting Services’ work in Mexico conserving bat populations through community engagement, projects in the Bahamas facilitating working relationships between fishers and law enforcement to prevent poaching and increase marine protected areas through collaboration, and building trust between diverse, BIPOC farmers and conservation organizations across North America. This position will expand their strengths to encompass work in synthesizing scientific information, improving current tone and themes, along with creating professional documents for high-level, global clients that will provide networking opportunities.
Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- Edit existing documents to be more formal and create a tone for Lacy Consulting
Services
- Synthesize data into laymen’s terms for a broad audience
- Beautify documents by adding figures, pictures, and diagrams
Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience writing technical science reports
- Degree in STEM
- Willing to collaborate with other consultants, as needed
- At least 1 foundation-level report completed
Preferred:
- Has a degree in environmental conservation
- Coursework in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Has written a paper for foundations and grantors
- At least 1 science paper published
- Ability to write in more than 1 language (Spanish and/or Portuguese especially)
Compensation:
As the work level alters between projects, this position will be hourly, and project-based. For the 6-month contract, the Senior Science Writer will make $41/hour. This position will be project-based, meaning that as projects are finalized, reports will require edits. Additional work may be found through editing previous project reports, creating summary reports for workshops, and formalizing documents for publication. As a startup business, we do require a level of investment and trust built before continuing past the initial 6-month contract. Depending on our level of project work after 6 months, this contract may be extended and/or expand duties.
The contract is subject to performance review and the employer will provide a 30-day notice to terminate if the contractor is not meeting performance standards which will include both tangible and intangible project and workplace metrics.
