Job Summary:

UTEC is a non-profit organization that supports proven risk emerging adults ages 17-25 by providing paid workforce training and education programs. UTEC’s program is designed for young adults with proven barriers to success, primarily incarceration and gang involvement. Our program pairs each young adult with a Transitional Coach that supports their progress towards their goals and supports them in removing barriers to success while they are enrolled in a workforce path (Culinary, Woodworking & Organizing) and/or enrolled in our Education program (HiSet Certification).

The Organizing Educator will be responsible for facilitating engaging learning experiences and opportunities for young adults to develop their social emotional skills as well as foundational concepts of Organizing. Social emotional learning will focus on the 5 core UTEC SEL Competencies which include Communication & Relationship, Growth Mindset, Independence, Self-reflection and Self-Management. Foundational concepts of organizing include morals, values and history that guide current-day organizing strategies. In this phase of programming young adults will explore social justice related topics that impact their communities and begin to formulate their identity as an organizer.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supervises a  work crew of up to 8-10 young adults in Foundations of Organizing and Level 1 Organizing
  • In Foundations Level:
    • Create curriculum that supports the learning of basic organizing principles, morals and ethics
    • Create opportunities for young adults to learn and grow SEL skills, specifically the UTEC Competencies
    • Support young adult in their identity development and understanding their strengths and areas of growth
    • Support young adults in their transition from Transformational Beginnings to Workforce programming by building community and culture, and providing opportunities to shadow the various programs and discuss potential areas where they will thrive
    • Peak their interest in organizing as a potential career path
  • In Level 1:
    • Support young adults in their identity development as an organizer
    • Help young adults explore all methods of organizing
    • Support young adults in identifying community issues to address and create a plan of action
    • Teach basic technical skills necessary for the workforce (email etiquette, GSuite, computer skills, etc.)
    • Begin working on basic documentation necessary for entering the workforce (appropriate email, draft a resume, etc.)
  • Uphold UTEC’s Standards of Accountability and restorative practices to support young adults in growing social emotional and positive decision making skills
  • Track and report attendance via weekly attendance
  • Consistently log all data required by program and grants
  • Report to grant and funders progress and barriers of Organizing program
  • Participate in UTEC’s activities and celebrations such as Fresh Inspirations, Circle Up and House Meal

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Special interest in building power among proven risk emerging adults to fight for social, economic and racial justice.

Education and Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience of direct service work with youth
  • Basic understanding of restorative justice and transformative justice practices
  • Lived experience relative to the young adults at UTEC is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Facilitation skills
  • Basic level of curriculum writing and implementation and/or willingness to learn on the job

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Able to travel as needed.

 

Salary range is $47k-$56k, commensurate with experience. Benefits include retirement 401K plan, health and dental (50-85% subsidized), 3 weeks paid vacation, holiday and paid sick/personal time, the opportunity for a paid sabbatical after 3 years, first-time homebuyers funding, and free counseling for all staff.
