Full-Time Organizing Director

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Organizing Director will coordinate, manage, and implement API PA’s base-building and electoral strategies to build power in and for Asian communities in Pennsylvania, with an emphasis on Southeastern PA and Central PA. The person in this role is responsible for building relationships with Asian community leaders, managing organizing staff, managing direct voter contact activities, coordinating issue organizing around community priorities, and anything else needed to advance the cause of building Asian power in Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities

  • Manage community and field organizing staff for both Pan-Asian and community-specific organizing efforts; hold staff accountable to meeting goals.
  • Coordinate efforts to register, identify, educate, persuade, and mobilize Asian voters in PA about supported candidates and issue priorities; manage engagement with non-API communities and voters as needed, especially during election season.
  • Manage volunteer-based voter contact efforts for Asian voters in PA
  • Recruit for, plan, and participate in 501(c)(4) grassroots advocacy activities across PA, such as supporter recruitment and member engagement.
  • Develop and lead campaigns to build power for Asian communities in PA, and create and implement strategies informed by community leaders and community members.
  • Build intentional relationships with Asian communities, organizations, and leaders who can support cross-collaboration efforts with API PA; manage relationships with non-API partner organizations and represent API PA at tables and coalitions as needed.
  • Maintain volunteer/member database (VAN/EveryAction) to track supporters, volunteers, and events, and use data to identify strategic ways to engage supporters; Ensure quality and timely data entry, management, and reporting.
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson as necessary to the media, to the community, and on social media; work with digital/comms staff to ensure digital, comms, and press work is integrated with organizing strategy and vice versa.
  • As necessary, coordinate or personally engage in lobbying efforts at the local, state, and federal levels to advance API PA’s policy priorities.
  • Create and implement leadership development programs to grow the skillset and experience of staff, members, and volunteers.
  • As a senior leadership team member, help lead strategic planning and decision-making for the organization. Share ideas and experience with other senior leadership team members to assist in navigating the different phases of organizational development.

 

Qualifications

  • There is no formal education requirement for this position. Ideal candidates will have at least both:
    • 3 years of community, issue, or electoral organizing experience
    • 1 year or 1 election cycle of management experience (or equivalent).
  • Personal or professional experience operating in and organizing Asian American communities.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of long-term and strategic community or issue organizing, the difference between organizing and mobilization, and deeply believe in supporting organizers and members so that people step into leadership and drive change on the issues that affect their lives.
  • Demonstrated experience with training, group facilitation, and relational skills to grow capacity and move a group of people who may come from different backgrounds and understanding towards transformative relationships and shared goals.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of API PA
  • Demonstrated ability to think on your feet and grow quickly in your role, including the ability to adapt to new technology and platforms
  • Ability to clarify immediate and long-term priorities for yourself and your direct reports amidst a fast-paced and quick shifting political environment
  • Open to a flexible schedule to accommodate members’ availability that can include evening or weekend hours 2-4x per month with the possibility of multiple times per week  during election cycles, primarily as we get closer to Election Day; these hours are approved for API PA’s comp time policy
  • At least 1 year’s experience with supervising organizing staff, leading them as a team and individually to set goals, create plans to meet those goals, and ensure accountability to those plans.
  • Access to a car.
  • Familiarity with voter file CRMs, especially the VAN/Every Action.

 

Preferred, not required
  • Familiarity with the dynamics of Asian communities in Pennsylvania in particular.
  • Conversational grasp of at least one Asian language.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Pennsylvania’s political terrain.
  • Knowledge of campaign finance law as it pertains to 501c3 and 501c4. organizations, as well as the operation of an Independent Expenditure program
  • Familiarity with organizational technology, including Google Suite, peer-to-peer SMS and predictive dialer platforms.

 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $60,000 – 80,000, based on experience
