The Manager of Health Initiatives will manage the implementation and evaluation of programs to promote health equity through improved nutrition security in the Food Bank’s service area. The Manager will collaborate with the Director of Health Initiatives (DoHI) on planning, development, and enhancement of health initiatives, and will work closely with Partner Engagement and Programs (PEP) colleagues to identify potential community/healthcare partners and implement strategies that improve access to nutritious and culturally familiar food choices, especially for marginalized groups including people of color and rural populations.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hope to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to nearly 119,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $50 million and an operating budget of $11 million support the work of more than 65 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.

The key responsibilities for the Manager of Health Initiatives include:

  • Manage existing healthcare partnerships including administration, data collection, evaluation, and improvement; educate health partners on connections between hunger and health, research and share effective and dignified approaches to “screen and intervene” for food insecurity
  • Develop and implement consistent policies, procedures, trainings, and effective practices for existing and new health and nutrition programs which maintain program integrity and ensure compliance with all contractual requirements
  • Collaborate with regional colleagues to onboard new healthcare partners and establish guest-centered in-clinic pantries,
  • Develop health and nutrition program strategies, utilize data, evaluate efficiencies, develop, and monitor impact metrics, and assess opportunities for expansion and enhancement across the BRAFB service area
  • Create and/or provide resource materials, training, and support to BRAFB partner agencies regarding partnering with health care providers and health-focused organizations in their community

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health/nutrition education, social services, or related field, or equivalent amount of training and experience, required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work, professional, or volunteer role experience in program planning, implementation, and/or evaluation required
  • Supervisory experience and/or training staff or volunteers required
  • Experience collaborating with diverse audiences and leading health/nutrition promotion programs strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of health care industry, food access programs, health equity, and/or experience in social service agencies or multi-cultural environments preferred
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.

The Manager of Health Initiatives is a full-time position, reporting to the Director of Health Initiatives, and offers an effective and healthy work culture, competitive salary, and excellent benefits.

Duties may require work during evenings and on weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Driving and travel throughout the service area is required to perform relational and administrative functions at agencies and program sites. The role can be based in either the Verona or Charlottesville location.
