Summary
Launched in 2019, Accountable.US is a nonpartisan watchdog group exposing corruption across all levels of government and holding our policymakers accountable. The projects at Accountable.US use traditional research tactics, such as public records requests, financial disclosure review, voting record analysis, and more to identify who is influencing public policy debates and why.
Accountable.US seeks an experienced Investigator who will manage and conduct complex investigations. As an investigator, you will be responsible for doing in-depth research on the organizations, companies, and other entities influencing the government. You will join a team of nimble researchers and investigators who work on a variety of projects, from vetting government actors to powerful outside influencers. A flexible personality, sense of humor, and positive attitude are also essential.
The ideal candidate will have a proven investigative track record, familiarity with all aspects of investigative research, including Freedom of Information Act requests, and a working understanding of federal and state laws and regulations.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
- Conduct investigative research on the backgrounds of organizations, companies, and other entities to inform communications work;
- Assist in identifying potential regulatory violations and consumer fraud and corporate misconduct;
- Build relationships with like-minded organizations;
- Analyze and summarize findings into comprehensive written reports; and
- Brief project director on findings in a clear and professional manner.
Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability
- At least 5 years of investigative, investigative journalism, or political research experience;
- Ability to analyze, summarize and communicate large amounts of information in a concise manner;
- Strong writing and research skills and excellent attention to detail;
- Ability to prioritize projects and assignments while meeting strict, and often overlapping, deadlines;
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy; and
- Impeccable professional ethics and integrity.
Valued and Non-Essential Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability
- Case management experience preferred;
- Understanding of non-profit regulatory frameworks;
- Financial or accounting background a plus;
- Experience researching money in politics; and
- Time spent either as a journalist or media professional.
