Job Description

The IGNITE AZ Organizer will play a pivotal role in advancing the goals and campaigns of Poder In Action and AZ Poder by organizing 18-24-year-old BIPOC and working-class people who want to take action against state violence and deepening authoritarianism. The IGNITE AZ Organizer will develop the leadership, political analysis, and organizing skills of community members across Phoenix. Key aspects of this role will be relationship building through 1:1s, political education, training, and holding culturally relevant events. This is a full-time position based in our Phoenix, Arizona office, reporting to the Organizing Director. 

About Us

Poder in Action (PIA)is a 501 (c) (3), grassroots organization that builds the power of people of color and working-class communities to disrupt and dismantle systems of oppression and determine a liberated future in Arizona by developing organizers, civic advocacy, and movement building. 

AZ Poder (AZP)  is a 501 (c) (4), that builds political and social power among working-class communities to disrupt and dismantle state violence through community governance, organizing our base to take action, and shifting our culture away from punishment towards health and wellness.

Key Responsibilities

Basebuilding and Recruitment

  • Recruit a base of 18-24 year old community members, through tactics such as street-teaming, canvassing, phone outreach, tabling on campuses and at events, and presenting to student groups
  • Hold at least five 1:1s per week with members and people interested in growing as leaders
  • Create culturally relevant events to provide information to the community, including educational workshops, community meetings, and skill building trainings

 Organizer Development, Training, and Political Education

  • Create leadership development plans for volunteers to grow their skills and analysis as future organizers, track their progress, and support them in completing their plan
    • Create and deliver political education workshops to develop team members’ political analysis 
  • Create and deliver training to develop the skills of community members so they can become organizers in the future (ex: how to hold 1:1s, how to deliver your story of self, etc.)
  • Engage people civically, including speaking at city council, registering voters, and mobilizing voters and people who cannot vote to influence policy at the municipal, county, and state levels

 Strategic Alliances and Organizational Representative

  • Lead in coalitions as a representative of the organization and develop working partnerships with other organizations and community groups
  • Be an external representative of the organization, including meeting with elected officials, doing interviews with the media, and presenting at conferences

Key Qualifications

Experience + Skills:

  • 2+ years of experience in grassroots organizing 
  • Bilingual in written and spoken English and Spanish preferred
  • Connection and personal story with systems of oppression
  • Excellent relationship-building and direct communication 
  • Commitment to the development of future organizers
  • Healthy conflict resolution
  • Results-oriented and proactive problem-solver
  • Persistent through ambiguity, flexible, and willing to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within and across multiple teams

Logistics

  • Salary: $65,000-$75,000 (DOE)
  • Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

  • Hours: 40-45 hours per week; evening and weekend availability required
  • Location: Arizona- majority in the office or in the field, some remote work possible
  • Travel: This position may require travel within Arizona, depending on the needs of the campaigns or goals, and to 1-2 conferences per year out-of-state
