UKCEH is looking for an experienced Greenhouse Gas Field Technician to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wetlands, Grasslands and Croplands team, based in Bangor, North Wales at the edge of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. You will be working on land-based solutions required to meet net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Working on a wide range of natural, semi-natural and managed peatland ecosystems, as well as land-based methods for greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere.
Responsible for field data collection activities across our network of greenhouse gas monitoring, peatland subsidence and paludiculture sites in the UK (and potentially overseas in SE Asia and Falkland Islands). Using state-of-the-art chamber methods and low-cost environmental sensors, conducting detailed surveys of greenhouse gas emissions, water balance and peat motion, across a variety of ecosystems.
Contributing to collection, management, analysis and publication of high-impact research data. Engaging with stakeholders from a wide range of organisations and contributing to scientific analyses and publications advancing research in this area.

Your main responsibilities will include:
- Conducting regular fieldwork to collect new data on greenhouse gas emissions, meteorological conditions, soils and peat motion
- Taking responsibility for regular maintenance and troubleshooting of greenhouse gas flux chambers, and low-cost sensor equipment
- Being the point of contact for farmers and other landowners across the UK. Liaising on the planning of fieldwork activities
- Creating a database of new field data
- Preparing datasets for use in scientific data analysis, and contributing to the analysis and publication of data papers
- Conducting laboratory work (e.g., determination of bulk density, drying of plant material, loss on ignition, etc.)
For the role of Greenhouse Gas Field Technician, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A degree in a relevant subject area (e.g., environmental sciences, physical science, engineering, forestry) or equivalent work experience
- A full UK driving licence (gearshift) and willingness to travel to remote field sites, year-round, in all weathers
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, with an ability to work independently, to deadlines, and maintaining a fully documented and reproducible workflow
- Ability to coordinate, plan and deliver fieldwork activities
- Good team working skills and the ability to develop effective collaborations
- Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including non-scientific
- Experience working in remote outdoor environments
- Enthusiasm, drive and passion for environmental science
Desirable Skills:-
- Knowledge of ecosystems; specifically, knowledge of peatlands, farming practices or communities and/or nature-based solutions
- Data analysis capability or willingness to develop these skills
- Experience of working with scientific equipment in the field, such as greenhouse gas analysers and chambers (e.g., Li-COR, Los Gatos, EGM-4 or similar gas analysers), soil sampling equipment (e.g., Dutch and peat auger), environmental sensors, data loggers or similar
- Management and curation of scientific datasets
- Experience of managing relationships with a network of external stakeholders to enable successful fieldwork
- Willingness to travel abroad to SE Asia (2-4 weeks at a time) to help conduct research related to tropical peatlands
