The position:
We are seeking a tenacious, determined and well organised individual with the drive to create progressive change for millions of farmed animals. You will be part of a small, high-impact team specialising in corporate outreach and policy
This is a full time, remote position based in the United Kingdom or the United States. Full-time hours equate to 40 hours/ week if based in the US and 37.5 hours/ week if based in the UK. This position requires domestic and international travel.

Who you are:
An advocate for animals, you are innovative, with a relentless attitude towards your work. You have a deep understanding of how the aquaculture industry works and are determined to use this knowledge to improve it. You are excited to bring your knowledge to advocates around the world and work with them to put this theory into practice.
Reporting to the Global Animal Welfare Manager, you are as comfortable reading and writing research papers as you are in the boardroom and on the farm. The primary focus of the position is to engage in dialogue and maintain relationships with food companies and governmental groups to deliver advice on farm animal welfare science. The position requires extensive research and you will be working closely with Open Wing Alliance members to organise meetings and strategise on securing improvements in welfare for aquatic animals from a science-based perspective.
You are passionate about The Humane League’s mission of ending the abuse of animals raised for food. While working with autonomy is an important part of your role, strong collaboration and communication skills are paramount to your success. You will have the ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast paced environment and be able to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
Primary Duties:
- Remain up-to-date with science and evidence base for aquaculture.
- Conduct extensive research into the scientific literature and corporate data relating to aquaculture systems and industries.
- Produce animal welfare education materials for Open Wing Alliance (OWA) members to utilise and share with the aquaculture industry to support higher welfare initiatives.
- Support campaign groups that are working with major food companies to advance protections for farmed animals within their supply chains.
- Produce referenced supporting documentation for our policies on farm animal welfare and deliver presentations on the science behind these policies.
- Professional communication with the aquaculture industry and when needed corporate executives.
- Work cohesively with team members intra- and inter-departmentally to coordinate on strategic initiatives.
- Work closely with OWA members to support them and coordinate on strategic initiatives.
- Track industry progress, working closely with other welfare specialists and the Global Research and Insights Analyst when required.
- Attend conferences and support OWA members at corporate meetings when required.
- Domestic and international travel as required.
Requirements:
This position requires technical knowledge and advanced education (Veterinary Degree/Master’s) in farm animal welfare science, or equivalent experience. On-farm experience required.
In addition:
- Attend events and protests as required.
- Participate in team meetings including note-taking and facilitation.
- Attend in-person workshops several times a year.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Global Animal Welfare Manager.

Cooperative: Although this position is highly independent, the success of this role relies on your ability to work cooperatively and collaborate with team members, as well as other NGOs and stakeholders.
Project management: You have the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks through to completion in a fast-paced environment. You are flexible, have strong planning, social, emotional and organisational skills.
Thought-leadership: An informed opinion leader on animal welfare science and the go-to person for the organisation. You are able to give advice, guidance and insight into all welfare issues and ways to improve systems relating to aquaculture.
Problem solving: You are a forward-looking thinker who anticipates needs, actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions with strong decision-making capability. Self-directed and able to plan and coordinate many projects simultaneously, often working with ambiguous guidelines.

This role is open to candidates based in both the United Kingdom and the United States and as such the specific benefits related to the position will vary depending on your location.
UK benefits include:

UK based salary: Starting salary of £39,690 or £43,659 for Inner London Weighting
US benefits include:

US based salary: Starting salary $66,600 or salary to commensurate with experience.
Please note: The gross salary across the two locations is not a direct conversion but is calculated by each hiring organisation using their own independent pay framework, with consideration of local working conditions, statutory rights and additional contributions when applicable.
