The Challenge
We are looking for a Geotechnical Operations Engineer to join our Western Regional Operations team.
Our Geotechnical Engineering team provides the geologic, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental engineering aspects of planning, design, construction, and maintenance of NC highways.
Our team collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadway slopes, embankments, and subgrades, and foundations of roadways and structures to ensure stability and cost-effective construction. We assist in the construction and maintenance of roadways and structures and investigates and develops a remediation plan for geotechnical or geoenvironmental problems.
We investigate known and potentially contaminated properties to identify the presence and provide removal instructions for hazardous material and underground storage tanks.
The team also reviews geotechnical designs and construction submittals from private engineering firms and contractors and takes part in new product evaluations before products are used in construction.
In this role, you will:
- Perform basic geotechnical engineering analysis and design for the Geotechnical Operations Group.
- Work closely with other NCDOT teams, especially NCDOT Division Offices, our Construction Unit, our Structures Management Unit, and our Design-Build Office to provide requested services.
- Perform construction reviews and monitor/inspect for problems involving geotechnical items such as slopes, walls, shallow or deep foundations during construction, and project maintenance phases.
- Review design recommendation reports prepared by in-house staff or consultants to ensure that the final products are error-free and comply with NCDOT policies, manuals, and standard practices.
What You Bring
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience understanding, interpreting, and explaining construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
- Experience interpreting and evaluating soil and rock properties and appropriately applying them to geotechnical engineering analysis.
- Experience performing mathematically correct engineering design and analysis.
- Experience communicating technical information concisely and effectively to varied audiences and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Note
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
