Salary – £29,733 to £31,553 Depending on experience
Fully site or fieldwork based, with occasional opportunities to work from home
Permanent and Full Time (37 hours per week)

We are recruiting a Freshwater Ecologist, with proven experience in field survey techniques, laboratory analysis of biological samples and data management.

 

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, numerate, and keen to learn a range of skills to help improve our understanding of the environment and assist our engagement with citizen science communities.

 

You will join a vibrant team of 12 Freshwater Ecologists, working on several important projects on freshwater rivers, lakes, and other wetlands. These include developing and validating innovative new methods for biomonitoring, which support decision making in ecosystem health and climate change mitigation. Our projects include MERLIN, the Bloomin’ Algae app and the long term monitoring of Loch Leven.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Collecting, identifying and counting of biological samples from lakes and rivers
  • Managing our microscope laboratory, including archiving samples, data and images
  • Supporting the development and validation of innovative methods for biomonitoring
  • Engaging with citizen scientists and other data providers to add value to UKCEH records
  • Contributing to research reports, peer reviewed papers and presentations
  • Supporting/coordinating researchers and students visiting our field sites

 

For the role of Freshwater Ecologist we are looking for somebody who has:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent experience in freshwater or marine science
  • Practical experience of field and laboratory methods used for monitoring and assessing wetland ecosystems
  • Experience of using microscopes for the counting and identification of phytoplankton samples
  • A willingness to work outdoors under a wide range of weather conditions, especially within the UK
  • Good attention to detail, excellent time management skills and an ability to meet project deadlines
  • A collaborative and inclusive approach to communication, especially with citizen scientists and the public
  • Excellent health and safety awareness
  • Full UK (manual) driving licence – please confirm on your CV

 

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in the survey, identification and counting of other freshwater plants and animals, especially zooplankton and aquatic plants
  • Experience of managing and archiving biological data and/or photographic images
  • Ability to use power boats, or willingness to learn
  • Willingness to work out of hours and overseas
