Job Description

The role of the Foreign Policy Legal Intern will be to assist with investigations and analysis aimed at strengthening our team’s ability to effectively advocate for U.S. targeted sanctions against human rights abusers and corrupt officials around the world. In particular, the intern will be asked to perform legal and policy background research to improve our understanding of the applicability and effects of different sanctions programs. The intern will also be asked to perform research and writing related to specific instances of serious human rights abuse and/or corruption as we work to identify individuals for consideration as possible designees under various government sanctions programs, including the Global Magnitsky Act. In addition, the intern will be asked to conduct research and draft materials to support Congressional advocacy efforts. The intern will gain professional experience in legal analysis, persuasive writing, and engagement with a diverse range of partners.

A computer and internet connection are required for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support the advocacy attorney in extended, deep-dive policy, legal, and data research projects to inform our global strategy related to human rights sanctions enforcement.

• Write reports and memos connecting research to day-to-day work of the Foreign Policy Team.

• Prepare daily news briefings for the Foreign Policy staff on events occurring around the world that are relevant to our work.

• Liaise with attorneys reviewing Magnitsky files to provide information and answer questions.

• Conduct research to gather information and prepare case files for Global Magnitsky cases involving serious human rights abuse or instances of corruption.

• Keep track, via internal databases, of different government, NGO coalition, and HRF metrics.

• Assist with coordinating coalition-wide NGO trainings

• Assist with advocacy with government entities and the public regarding the Global Magnitsky Act (drafting blogs, op-eds, factsheets, other publications)

• Opportunity for additional responsibilities based on performance.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

• Strong research and writing skills

•Significant knowledge of the human rights context in at least one region of the world(Africa, Near East, or Central and South Asia preferred), and/or significant knowledge of human rights issues facing vulnerable and marginalized groups;

• Knowledge of how to apply legal standards to the facts of specific cases;

•Knowledge of human rights and/or anti-corruption concepts, methods, statutes, and instruments desirable;

•Strong organizational skills;

• Foreign language skills desirable;

REQUIRED EDUCATION: Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, an accredited law school.
COMPENSATION: Unpaid
START DATE: June 2nd, 2021
TIME COMMITMENT: 15 hours per week.Internship will run until August 14th, 2021.
