Full-Time Engineering Technician II – Project Inspector
Job Description
- Serve as a project roadway/structure inspector supporting senior engineers in the administration of highway construction contracts.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
- Monitor and document contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing.
- Perform record keeping and obtain/maintain certifications required to perform material samplings and testing.
- Work independently and as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Keep daily inspector diaries on project operations, complete material reports, including materials received,
- Document pay records, perform construction calculations, and conduct data entry on laptops/iPads.
- Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.
- Understanding of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Experience performing inspections, samplings, and materials testing (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including performing laptop/iPad data entry.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Communication skills to engage effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to apply math skills in basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment, and ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
- Ability to safely drive a state vehicle.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling.
- You may be exposed to hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
- You will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions, and may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by project on any assigned Division 9 project.
- Candidates with experience with iPads/tablets, HiCams, and SharePlus/SharePoint.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
