What’s the role?

The Energy Systems Engineer develops and supports delivery of carbon reduction projects. This requires technical evaluation, concept design, specification, inspection and witnessing. This role is critical to the success of carbon reduction measures implemented by SMS’s customers, including monitoring, controls and heating projects.

The ES Engineer contributes to the success of SMS’s projects by:

  • Undertaking energy audits of customer sites to assess the efficiency of major energy uses and identify opportunities for carbon reduction.
  • Assessing technology options, technically and financially.
  • Inputting technical requirements to specifications and other instructions.
  • Reviewing designs to check their alignment with the specification, checking installations align with designs and all components are fully integrated.
  • Verifying efficient operation through review and analysis of relevant data.

The ES Engineer will work in New Energy Systems, collaborating directly with consultants, engineers, analysts and project managers within the department. The role also requires engagement with other SMS departments; key internal stakeholders will include IT, Data Services, Finance and Procurement; as well as liaison with technology suppliers and installation sub-contractors. The ES Engineer must be able to travel throughout the UK and may need to travel abroad.

The ES Engineer role provides an opportunity to make a major contribution to carbon reduction by ensuring robust technologies and systems are implemented to improve energy performance.

The working hours for this role is 37.5 hours per week, 08:30 – 17:00, Monday to Friday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mapping project requirements and constraints.
  • Undertake in-depth energy audit of buildings and energy systems and produce high-quality, client-focused energy audit reports.
  • Research and keep up to date with energy saving technology & systems improvements.
  • Development and oversight of a wide variety of project types, potentially including sub-metering, IoT controls, heat pumps and solar PV.
  • Due diligence on technology options assessing cost, payback, performance standards and integration requirements.
  • Concept design, including schematics and sketch layouts.
  • Budget costing based on concept designs and supplier estimates.
  • Developing engineering specifications to communicate project objectives, constraints, standards, technology performance, control strategy, monitoring system, commissioning and handover.
  • Liaison with technology suppliers and installation sub-contractors to ensure requirements, designs and specifications are clearly understood and correctly delivered.
  • Tracking project progress, identify/track/assess/mitigate risks.
  • Plan and develop projects in an independent manner with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Provide clear reports and other communications to colleagues and customers.
  • Inputs to department’s continuous improvement, e.g. through process drafting and review, knowledge sharing, responding to customer feedback, etc.

 

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • A Degree or equivalent in engineering or physical sciences.
  • An in-depth understanding of mechanical and electrical energy systems and solutions, ideally relevant to consumption mitigation.
  • Experience of energy or building services modelling packages.
  • Experience of system design and engineering drawing.
  • Experience of costing systems and components.
  • Experience of installation or project management of mechanical or electrical engineering projects.
  • The ability to build and maintain customer and other stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong situational judgement and risk management skills.
