Job Description

Summary:

Are you a science reporter with a flair for identifying important and overlooked discoveries and trends? Do you have an interest in telling stories about how the scientific process helps explain the world around us? If you do, please apply for a temporary, full-time science news reporter position with Inside Science, an editorially independent news website of the American Institute of Physics (AIP). This is a remote position for early career journalists who have experience in either news reporting or science. The position is expected to begin in August or September, include 40 hours per week and last for a term of 3-4 months.

The successful journalist candidate for Inside Science will be responsible for independently reporting breaking science news and features under the guidance and direction of website staff. The position will also include some editing and production workflow responsibilities. Assignments will include Earth Sciences and other topics from our eight primary beats, according to the writer’s interest and the website’s needs. There is a possibility of in-person reporting from a science conference.

 

Proposal Packet Must Include: Cover letter, resume, a completed application and two writing samples.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of experience in Journalism, Broadcasting or Science, but we will consider candidates who have accumulated relevant skills and experience in other ways.
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated interest and ability in news writing; excellent writing and communication skills; attention to detail; internet savviness; interest in science.
  • Experience writing about science for general audiences preferred but not required.
