The DEI Specialist will be a collaborative, courageous and innovative partner to the DEI Manager in support of ongoing work to further build and maintain relationships, effectively communicate internally with all stakeholders, and help influence change and positive behaviors across the organization.

This role performs complex and varied functions in the planning, administration, implementation, and evaluation of internal DEI programs, trainings, and special projects, while advocating for and fostering a culture of inclusion through your commitment and dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion work. This work requires diverse skills and abilities in multi-tasking and producing in a dynamic environment and work is performed under the general supervision of the DEI Manager.

Your day-to-day work includes
Assisting and providing day to day support to the DEI Manager in the identification, planning, administration, implementation and evaluation of internal DEI programs, trainings, initiatives and special projects;

Developing and implementing various internal DEI programming initiatives that enhance opportunities for education, understanding and relationship building; assisting in the implementation of employee resource groups (ERGs);

Identifying, developing, and facilitating internal DEI training seminars and workshops for staff that promotes Cary’s commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming workplace; serving as a resource to staff in identifying external learning opportunities;

Coordinating and providing varied administrative support for DEI meetings, materials, and stakeholders for ongoing internal DEI programs; creating and communicating varied marketing materials and announcements;

Measuring, tracking, and evaluating DEI internal initiatives and outcomes to assess growth and challenges; compile and organize data;

Creating presentations, communications and reports to update stakeholders on DEI strategies, programs, and initiatives;

Gathering and performing research and analysis on current DEI trends and best practices and preparing reports and recommendations to the DEI Manager on other DEI priorities;

Encouraging and offering opportunities for courageous conversations; communicating cultural celebrations, other diversity recognitions, events and educational tools and resources; assisting with strategic internal communications;

Building relationships with Town staff and stakeholders; aiding as a resource for issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion;

Contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment to encourage knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage and include individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives;

Participating in continued DEI trainings and certifications for ongoing professional development and learning;

Identifying and escalating issues to appropriate stakeholders; demonstrating critical thinking and making situation-appropriate decisions

Understanding and navigating various factors, including management priorities, political environments, and internal and external consideration;

Serving on Town committees and subcommittees as needed;

Performing other job-related tasks as required.

What is required

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in human resources, human relations, organizational development, business administration, public administration, sociology, psychology or a closely related field and a minimum of two years’ experience in human resources, human relations, social justice and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion work.

What will Distinguish You
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

  • A minimum of two years’ responsible administrative experience in support of DEI initiatives
  • Experience in facilitating diversity, equity and inclusion training
  • Experience in developing DEI programming initiatives
  • Ability to work on a variety of tasks and duties while being extremely detail-oriented and organized
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to make data-driven decisions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, both in writing and orally

Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
